Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Denise, I guess old habit.  Another one to let go of.  Of course he didn't pay for it.  So I will check with a co-worker that does taxes.

Am working on taxes for my Seabee today.  Does anyone know if you can deduct the cost of getting all legal matters in order?  That was one thing I made sure we did before he left for bootcamp.

My son will be moving into an apartment with a buddy next month.  Not sure I am liking that idea, but I have to let go sometime.

Jmarie46....i am here stationed with my husband who is currently in UT A-School. We already have orders and I leave in a week and a half. My husband will follow shortly after. Are you here for A-school or do you have someone here?

Maybe I wasn't told the full story, but I thought it served him right (can't listen to mom anymore because he is a big boy) lol.  There is all sorts of Seabee stuff on base in Gulfport.  I love my Seabee hoodie.  Most of my other things are Navy (not sailor).

Denise, I thought the call to your son was a little funny since I told my son not to go mudding by himself.  I guess he had about 4 people there to get him out.  Boys and their toys.

Yes, I am a mom that has been told she is "too proud" and asked if I wouldn't buy anymore Navy "stuff".

Sharon- I was going to ask about that pic. It is a pic like one Kayla's friend has. He calls his the God moment. His was in Afghanistan or Iraq though. Not sure I know it was mountainous.

I love that pic.

She would be one to go on the mountains, in CA she and I climbed a (itty bitty) mountain with her friends. Ummm not good for momma (was just a year ago) but she felt great. I find higher up, I really do have same issue as most with breathing. Umm I get no air intake. She did great, she was running and having a blast.

I am happy for her, she really wants to go and see Japan, (Yapin as she has it renamed for my younger ones being silly), she says she can not wait, but then she says, I am going to miss everyone and everything I am use to. Welcome to the Navy!!!!

Denise: My husband has been told by some of his instructors and others who have been a Seabee for awhile, that when on shore duty they "push papers"....like I said that's just what he was told. We really don't know what he will actually do while on shore duty until he gets placed on shore duty. Not to mention, every one does different things, so someone else's experience on shore or sea duty could be totally opposite of anothers. We just go with the flow of things lol.

LOL, it made sense to me! I'm almost positive she is on sea duty. If you ask her, she should know. I am still learning, but I do a LOT of research. I spend my days at home on the computer on military sites. I have become a "go to" person for the guys on base as well. I have been trying to help them and their wives figure out moving, housing, pay etc. They don't really have the time to do it, and some of the wives just don't feel comfortable asking questions or researching for themselves. I really enjoy helping people and sharing knowledge so it gives me great joy to help! There are so many things that I know about that my hubby doesn't....and when he finds things out he will tell me and most time I finish his sentence and he is just dumbfounded at how much I already know. They are really just like us, learning along the way. It also helps to come on here and see other experiences other people have had with the Navy. Honestly, I feel like it's the best thing that has ever happened to us, and we too have been fortunate enough to get everything we want.
