The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

ok, so if she is only going a short time then this would be sea duty?

Yes I never even thought of the earthquakes. I sometimes get past things happening right here and forget that we still live in a huge world.

Thanks for that information. I am still learning a lot myself. We look to all the ones who have gone before us to answer some (pretty basic really) questions.

I am happy, I know that no matter she will be happy. She wanted to go to Japan. This child has gotten pretty lucky, everyplace she has said would be nice.... poof it (was/is) where she has been/will be.

sorry not sure if that made any sense at all....

Tobianne-my hubby is on sea duty. Our homeport is Gulfport, but during the 54 months we are stationed there he will be sent on 8-10 month deployments. When he gets back he will train and PT until the next deployment....that's really all they do on homeport from what he has been told. When they are on shore duty, they basically do what's called "pushing papers." They sit behind a desk and do no deployments at all. They also usually lasts about 36 months or so. It depends on the rotation. Of course, it could change depending on the current situations that are happening in the world, nothing is ever for sure in the Navy lol.  Kayla is most likely on sea duty first since she is deploying to Japan. My hubby may also be deploying to Japan, but a whole lot quicker than I would like. We may get a month together in Gulfport before he is shipped, still waiting to hear if it's for sure or not.

On the other note about wives and girlfriends having the "family" over for dinner......if that's not the truth then I don't know what is. I have quickly become family with most of the Seabee's here in A-school. I feed them, take them off base when they need to, and have become a second wife to few others LOL. I really love the Navy and especially the Seabee's. My husband makes me proud every single day and I'm excited to see what else he is going to accomplish during his time as a Seabee :D

My daughter is NMCB40 she will be out of PH, CA. She is going to Japan later this year. This is called shore duty? I guess since they are not on a ship, lol. Not to sure what it is that they actually would do in Japan?? Not a big thing though. They all love the travel (I am sure mine will). Would think they do work of course, but it is hard to think of what would be needing done. lol

I think my son is NMCB1 ??? is that one of the battallions?
Comment by Tobianne on January 20, 2011 at 4:24pm

Right Sharon, I have heard of many doing combat training after a deployment. Odd how that works.

Momof4 it does depend on what unit he will attach to.

Sharon- what unit is your son in? I do not remember if you mentioned that at some point.

Comment by Tobianne on January 20, 2011 at 4:21pm

Momof4- I am almost 100% positive, every Seabee goes to GP for combat training. Not sure if there is any other place for them to be trained for this.

This is a vital part of what they do. All of our Seabee's will be trained in how to protect themselves, rest assured though, They most always have the Marines at their side if in a area of possible danger. This is why the motto is...

"We Build" "We Fight".

Look up some photo's of the Seabee's (you tube has some great ones) you will see them in the sand box with the guns.

I have also seen some pics (can not find the site anymore) of them doing some humanitarian work, guns were also showed. Just depends on the area and what is needed. We would never want to send our Bee's out with no ability to defend themselves.

He also may not have mentioned this as it is a very short time they are there for training. Unless they as HotFlashes Bee will be stationed there.

Mom of4, my son went to port H for A school. he is a CM. Now he is in gulfport for combat training, however his orders are for him to be stationed there in Gulf port for 2 years. They can be sent anywhere.
Comment by Tobianne on January 20, 2011 at 3:11pm

hotflashes- I know that my kiddo told me, some of the wives and GF have already been informed that many a night they will have "family" for dinner and to be prepared! lol

I have expressed to my kid to make sure she comes bearing gifts! (food, dessert, and soda(pop)). This is the best thing that they are all so close. Many new friends will be made in the next 30 days, some are as you said coming from different bases and may not be stationed together. No less family for sure.

I am sure at some point our Seabee's will meet and become friends, my kiddo knows no strangers! lol  She is a friendly girl. She will meet up with her upperclass friends and I am sure they have made some new buddies also.

Ladies we are all linked, not just by the Navy itself (big Navy) but by the smaller and much more friendly Seabee Units that our loved ones are a part of.

Stacey- just call him a "Seabee" from the start! lol  They know they are Sailors, however they have earned the right to have that name as a second and the Seabee first.
