OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Jessie, I know how you feel and denise is right on the issue. But I so understand the way you feel. Hang in there girl. Once he is settled and some time to get use to the situation you will feel more comfortable. Take it from me, I wrote to my son everyday in bootcamp for two reasons. One to let him know how proud of him I was and two it was therapy for me I guess. He was just happy to have mail everyday but it really did help me and now Im super comfortable that he lets me know what he can. On his recent deployment to afganistan I thought he went only on one or two convoys but he went on alot more. He didnt want to worry me. So just hang in there thats what we are here for as moms to talk and get things off our chest. Good luck I know its tough. Hugs!!!!

He's a BU - builder. He just got there and I don't think they've actually started classes yet. I was just curious about life there, liberty, schedules, etc. I'd like to plan a visit next month. I guess I'm just impatient. The fact that he has his cell and laptop and can communicate more should make make me chill a little but I'm still impatient. I still feel so in the dark. Thanks for the links, Denise. . . lots of info.

Hi everyone  its me Nita,, Yeh the name got added to.. it used to be just Nitabee. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas. My son  and his wife won't be in NY for Christmas, as they were just here last month for my mom's funeral. But I needed them more last month. My family was together and that's what matters. So now mom is spending her Christmases back with Dad.  MAnda. I hope hubby enjoys his time with 133. they are a wonderful group. make sure you join the FRG that 133 has. They are a great group and they have alot of great activities. They have a facebook page too.

Tobianne-

They are a very tight knit bunch and I'm so glad it's such a great community. I know it makes mom's feel good to know their kids are in a great area of the Navy. It also helps us wives find other wives out there who know exactly what we are going through and can communicate with similar knowledge. I know all wives in the military deal with emotions and such, but the Seabee community really is quite different than other parts of the Navy. I love the military so far and I am so glad my hubby decided to join! I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas :D

So I am off at 7P to go and get my kiddo. It will be so nice to have her home. Wish I could make time move fast just until I can pick her up. lol

Manda20-

Kayla said Mahhh, she is a super nice girl and she made me pizza!  Umm anyone that cooks for my kiddo has just gotten a bestfriend. She is like a starving pup, feed it and it loves you forever!

She said your husband is just like the rest if the guys there, like her brother!

I guess something happened and she now has a bruise on her face and she said "K" was gonna kill him an idiot!!! lol

This makes things a bit easier for a mom, knowing that some one there is looking out for her!! That is why the Seabee Family is so close they watch out for one another. I just get to see now how much.
