OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Awe Joanie Tyler's mom- what a great pic. I can not wait. We are putting our tree up this week, but I am leaving the Angel off until Kayla gets home, she can put it on top for me. I know how you feel, yes she will also be deployed next Christmas as I am told. So this one will have to be great.

Lou2, 1 proud seabee mom, Kym proud mom & Kim, my son had his A school & is in combat school now in Gulfport, MS. He is a BU. So I think it really is where ever they have the room for A school. If you get a chance to go down there to visit, it is beautiful.

Tobianne, my son just finished A school at Shepard in October! He is also a CE. He wasn't to crazy about those climbs either. I hope she is ok.

I got a text today from my daughter. She fell during a utility pole climbing exercise.
She said she was about 18-19 feet up and slipped out of the hole she had her gaff in, and down she went about 5 feet. Caught herself, but could not recover, so down the rest of the way she went. She says she is ok, but her knee is hurting pretty bad. I told her to go to med call, she says tomorrow if it is still bad. She is going with a few to her chiefs house for dinner, ( I told her to take pepto for his cooking!! Wife and kids are back home) and does not want to miss out if possible. She said that the chief will look at this and just make her go if bad!!

I ask if she still loves it. She says yes, just hates the wind. It is scary up there, she is now understanding why her dad has always said this, he is in construction and the wind has always made his job tough. (Roofer)...
