OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Big hugs and loves to you NitaBee... I lost my mom on the first day of my son's first deployment. They wouldn't let him go home since he was boarding a flight to Africa when she died. It's a blessing to have your Seabee come home.

JeanC- I thought about that, but the largest box is like 14.50, and when my son and I looked at what she wanted, well it would have been 2 of the large boxes and maybe one of the medium. So, really the 30.00 was not bad. (was actually like 27.90) I only asked Kayla to pay like 10.

NitaBee- yes she is a CE. She says she really thinks she is going to like it!
There are only 2 females in her class the other is AF, and she is about 30 and will have a unit to run (she is class leader and always with the teachers) so she really is not even part of the class as Kayla says (5 Navy-18AF) and they let Kayla pretty much play on the machines first!
She says she got to run the "Cherry Picker" and all the guys were upset, then the other big stuff she was on first so they used her as demonstration! She thought at first it was cause the teachers (AF) did not like her, then she realized they keep attention of the guys if a girl is on it!! She says she misses hanging out with her UT buddies. They got pretty close as they were all on hold when they got there and only 1 other CE was there. Then a week before school in came the other 3.
She was happy to report she had passed her second block test yesterday with an 83. I said why 83. I got well mom, well I am always on watch when we set our study group up. She is ends up with someones watch all the time as they know she will not complain! She says I hate when ppl are SIQ.

She is a CE. I just sent off the 3rd box to her!!! lol. I said with this one she has to pay for part of it. It is about 30 every time I send her a box of "clothes".... This is stuff she just wants just in case... in case of what!!!

You are funny! So do I...in fact sometimes I just "think" too much! lol .... I just texted him to see if he needs me to send him anything? He gave me the address last night but it's his first real day so I guess he'll give me more info as he receives it. Thanks Tobianne...what rate of seabee is your daughter? My son wants to try for acb? Amphibious CB? they are in virginia

sorry that was suppose to say not completely sure. I know that her friend is AF and he will not be coming home. I think faster than I type!! lol
Comment by Tobianne on November 2, 2010 at 4:31pm
Jmarie- I am completely sure that the AF part of the base is shut down, just the Navy I think.

Now also I am hoping that they all get the same break. I know she said that hers would be a bit different. She will get back and shortly leave to go the GP. lol

I can ask her when she calls if he is not able to call much, also he may not know much until class starts. Kayla ran around with UT's when she first got there. Then she started class and just see's the guys at the galley and here and there. They do make many friends.
