OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Well I followed my son down to Gulfport this weekend to get him settled. Got his truck safely down there got him all checked in over the weekend. It was really hard to leave him there, but know he'll be fine. Me...that may take a bit, but we all know how that is. So thankful for this group and know that I am praying for all of you and all our Seabees!!!

Well, I got to send my son his first care package- yea! I didn't have a cluewehat to send. He requested 3 long sleave shirts, I added a giant bag of sour patch kids, some deodorant, some powdered drink mix, and some plastic zip lock bags. i read that the bags are good for protecting stuff from dust, expecially electronic stuff. Since my son is not real communicative, I just started asking direct questions he has done pretty good at responding. Evidently the food is good, he has a nice set up in his (area) and he is doing OK. What more could I ask for? I feel pretty good about him being there now, for the time being anyway. To all moms out there, just keep asking! If only our children would realize how little it takes on thier part to aliviate our worries and fears!! I hope all is well with everyone and that all news is good news!

This is all so new to me, my son doesn't even leave for bc until next July. I've been reading all I can about the Seabees but still want to know more and to hear from actual moms what it's all about. Can you fill me in please? What all kinds of things do they do?

Thank you so very much Robin, this helps me a lot. Unfortunately our son is a very private person and really doesn't tell us a whole a lot. We're not sure when or where he will be deployed.
Comment by Kim on August 12, 2010 at 10:19pm
Kym - thanks; I had no idea what that was for (Navy Speak). I think I will be using it a lot. Now, is it okay if I contact my son's Ombudsman?
Comment by Kim on August 11, 2010 at 9:38pm
Robin - can you tell what is an Ombudsman and do they do? You can send me a pm if you need to.

Well my son and I decided we would get tattoos together when he turned 18 (you know something we wouldn't normally do together), and then he enlisted. His recruiter told him he needed to wait until after A school but definately after boot camp. Then he broke his collar bone and had to resign all his papers after his medical release. So we got them during that time. Now, likely I am done...he however, is not! That's definately his choice now. I'll be honest, it was kind of a cool bonding thing for the two of us.

Kym -confession. I have one too. But ya we have to let them do what they are going to do anyway. lol
