OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

cdbeck- My Seabee PIR'd on 8-30 he flew to Gulfport the morning of the 31st.  We had 8 glorious hours with him.  How much time you get together all depends on when her flight out to CA is.  You will not know that till you see her at PIR.  You are the only one who can decide if you are able to go to GL for Christmas day.  If you don't she will be well cared for and will most likely have a fine time there.  It is a roll of the dice...1 day for sure or the hope of a day + at PIR, unless you can swing both.

My daughter in in bootcamp ship 14 div 054, after graduation she will head to Port Hueneme. I am missing her some kinda bad. When she graduates, we don't know how long we will have with her. Does any one know? Thinking about seeing her on Christmas Day for Adopt A Sailor. The paper work needs to be turned in by the 13th. She graduates 15 days after Christmas, she wrote that we didn't need to come. Just missing her

belovedbyHim,

My son is also a BU at A school in Gulfport. When does he graduate? Mine finishes on Jan. 17th. We are also hoping for Port Hueneme (We live in So Calif).

Welcome to the bee's Jessiesmom.  My son is a BU. currently he is in Gulfport for A school.  He's hoping for Port Hueneme when he's done with A & combat schools.  His sister lives in LA so he'd have family closer than he does now.  He also mentioned Europe as an option.

Jessiesmom, when is her PIR? What job will she be going to school for?
Comment by jessiesmom2013 on December 9, 2013 at 1:13pm

my daughter is in Boot right now but will be going to Port Hueneme once PIR is done and then they said Gulfport for a month.  From there she will go where needed.  So proud of her.

Thanks! I will try to get him to get a PO box. You're right about him checking it - unless I tell him I sent money!

My son also is in Gulfport until Dec 16th.  We did not get an address for him either.  Possibly because of the short time span he is there.

Comment by Philip'sMom (Deb) on December 7, 2013 at 12:04pm

Kim, yes he uses the Post Office on base. Once he gets one, you will have to get him to actually check it!  We have that problem...haha
