OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Amy - thank you for posting.  It's always nice to see someone on here who has knowledge when I feel clueless LOL.  Would love to hear more about it, did he like it?

Debi - My son is in Ft Leonardwood right now finishing his A school to be an EO, he graduates 5/24.  He LOVES the schooling part and learning to drive all the big machinery.  I will say, he has not been particularly fond of Ft. Leonardwood itself (I guess the call it Ft Lost in the woods for a reason).  He just found out he will be stationed in Coronado as part of the Amphibious Construction Batallion 1, he is super excited about that.  His favorite thing to do is pick up the new recruits and help mentor them...perhaps he will meet your son?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yes it certainly feels great knowing he's just a phone call/text/video away. He's been posting like crazy on facebook and loves waking up to PT as it's the familiar routine and keeps the "bored bug" away also.:)

dSMomma yup your son is in the home stretch of things now. There's nothing I've ever experienced like I felt when I saw him come through the gate during his PIR.

Debi Wish you and your son nothing but success., yes where their heart is is where their happiness is. Good thing your'e not headed to FLW during the bitter cold mths. I did my basic training there and brrrrr it's cold. lol

Congratulations Debi!  My daughter PIR'd a lil over a year. She too was put on temp. holding. On the bright side, it gave her time to sight see on her time off.

I have no idea what an EO is. But it sounds exciting!!!!

Hello all! I am new to this group. My sailor PIR'd on 4/19 and was put into temporary holding awaiting waivers..waivers were denied so he needed to pick a new rate. Today he got to pick his rate!! He's so excited to be a seabee as an EO! He was told that he'd never get in to seabee because of the overstaffing but just after he did his security clearance and was approved the EO position popped up and he grabbed it. His words to me were "Mom this will make me happy!" I was like GO FOR IT! If he's happy..I'm happy.

I look forward to chatting with you..it is a different direction than what he orginally signed up for but I'm eager to learn and am eagerly planning a trip to Ft. Leonard Wood :)

HizproudmAma My Sons PIR Is 5/17 Then He Flies To GP Fo A BU. I Don't Know How Accurate His Info Is But He Was Told His Class Should Start 5/28 I Think. Congratulations On Your Son Moving On To A School, I Know I Can't Wait For These 2 Weeks To Be Up!

Hi HizproudMama, welcome you must feel so much better now that your son is ready to start A school. My Seabee son is a builder in 133 who returned from his first deployment in 3/13. There really is no way of knowing when school will start because it does depend on how quickly the class fills up. So he may be a little bored until he gets busy again. If you should have any questions and I don't know the answer I will gladly ask my son for you!

Hello everyone, My sailor just arrived yesterday to Gulfport from Great Lakes and is really enjoying the weather and freedom thus far. :) My question for the veteran moms is about the hold time. He said they're on hold until others arrive before they can start class. Will this be a very long time??

Comment by yelomoon on May 4, 2013 at 10:18pm

yes, I realize I spelled your name wrong. Sorry!!
