OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Just got a call from my son.  He is currently at A school in Port Hueneme, Ca, CM.  Only 17 days left!  He got his duty station today and is reporting to Coronado. It is an amphibious base.  Can anyone give me any tips on anything??

For the mom who was wondering about hotels around Gulfport,  We visited our son last month and stayed at the Wingate hotel on Beach Blvd and Broad Ave,  Fairly new hotel and it was $82 a night with got the military discount since we were visiting our son.  This included a continental breakfast that was good too.  Very close to base (2 miles) and staff was very friendly and rooms were clean.  Navy lodge was booked when we stayed, but this hotel is right on the beach and has heated swimming pool too.

Hi DaltonsMom. Nothing I am wondering about yet. My son is in first week of boot camp. I'm just missing him so much and looking forward to him getting to A school where life can be a little more normal!

Hi Karen! My son is also a CE and is at Shepard right now. He has been there for about 5 weeks and has been in school for about 3 weeks. He really seems to love it there (well except for the actually studying part...LOL) He does enjoy the hands on stuff quite a bit! Is there anything specific you're wondering about?

I would like to know about the women who adopt sailors. Those who attend events that parents or family members are not there.

Hey....my son just left GL and is now in Sheppard.  Karen, he showed me pics of his room that he shares with  someone and it looks real nice and clean.  Like a dorm room, maybe bigger.  He's thrilled to be there.

We stayed in the Navy Lodge and lived it it has a kitchenette and at $70 a night it was very affordable it was great to be on base so my son could stay with us at night and join us for lunch most days too! They hav a website that is easy to use to make reservations you just need your daughter at the time of checkin very easy!
