It's hard not knowing! That is the purpose for this group. Most likely if you are here your SR has had trouble keeping up or not passed a PFA due to some sort of minor medical issue. Often it stress fractures bringing SR's here. Know this when you don’t get a call that is a very good thing. Calling them is not a good thing and it can negatively impact your SR to have his or her “Mommy“ calling! They are harder on them in this DIV than any other. They want them up and out. The best thing you can do is sends tons of mail. Send scripture and motivational mail. I know my SR said reading the Bible was considered a sign of weakness here. When you get a tearful call motivate. Stay positive and encourage you SR. This is a small detour to greatness and getting the I'm a Sailor call! Recruit family and friends…“Navy mom friends are the best“…to send your SR mail as well. NMH for you all!!

So Kyle had a doctors appointment scheduled for Monday but I haven't heard from him, which I assume means he is still in the RCU - didn't get moved to a division. Repeating over and over no news is good news! FInd this last week the hardest of the 8 weeks so far that he has been gone. Not sure if its a combination of how long its been and the fact his PIR would be this Friday?! It's a strange feeling, because I will still be taking my flight and traveling to chicago to visit family. The positive I guess is my letters will get to him in a day when I am there!!!! Thank god! Hope everyone else's SR's are doing well and thank you for all the support thus far. It is deff therapeutic to read everyone else stories and be able to talk with everyone that is going through the same thing!
NavyKnit22... It sounds like you have a handle on this "keep encouraging him" thing already -- LOL!! I know it's so hard when they are so close to the end (and you've made your plans...), but hopefully he will heal quickly and then can finish with another division so you can still attend PIR. If you read some of the (recent) past posts, some of the other moms have been able to get refunds on plane tickets, so you might want to check those out -- if you need to deal with the airlines. Susan (Paces) is right, your son's determination and willingness to continue even when injured will get their attention (in a good way, of course.) Be sure to let us know all about his injuries -- we are the typical moms that want to know everything about everything -- LOL!
Peggy... Have a great vacation. Try to relax and enjoy yourself.
navyknit22...So sorry to hear about your SR's injury. It is so hard when they are so close. Congrats on the sharpshooter ribbon. That ribbon will look so good on his uniform. They grow up and mature so much by the time they come home. It is an amazing transformation. I know time is creeping by right now, but it will be there before you know it and you will look back at this time and wonder how you made it through.
The fact that he continued to run on his leg when it was injured will get everyone's attention. That is a testament to his determination and dedication. They are looking for those qualities in our SR's and sailors. He will be fine. They will take good care of him.
Do you know what he broke? Ours was the fibula. A complete fracture. Have they told him how long his recovery should take? Depending on the break, he may not get to do anything. Ours wasn't able to even do push-ups because they were afraid he would injure his leg worse. He was in a metal brace for several weeks. He had to be supervised for everything he did and he was only able to go to the restroom and to shower.
Let us know how he is doing. Keeping you and your SR in our prayers. Hugs and prayers, Susan
Dear navyknit22,
Oh my goodness he was so close. Thankfully he did get help before it got even worse. Congrats to him on the sharpshooter ribbon. You should be so proud of him! I agree he will be a different person when he graduates. I'm so looking forward to when that time comes when they graduate from boot camp.. :-)
Hi navyknit22,
All of us moms are in it together. Sharing helps all of us so much. My son said the same thing about about a future graduation, that he would understand if we could not come. I responded the same as you, no matter what we will be there. I am sure he was thrilled and it gave him encouragement to continue on with healing , and then on to finish boot camp.
NAVE2011MOM/Janet,
Thank you for all the encouraging words. I know it helps all of us! I just want to let everyone know I leave Wednesday for vacation and come home July 23rd. I am not sure if I will have internet service to correspond with everyone. Know that I am sending out prayers to all the moms and recruits. :-)
Two For the Navy... I think that if we didn't have the communication cut-off that we have when the kids are in boot camp, things would just be so much easier. Unfortunately, when you have that delay between when a letter is written and when it is received, it makes it that much harder on us moms. Knowing that your child injured, but not being able to give the lengthy compassion we would give them if they were home with us is so hard to handle. Just know that there ARE people there in the RCU that really do care about your son and know how down he is about this. I can't tell you how many times my son started either a letter or a call with, "I'm so sorry for all the trouble I'm causing..." It would absolutely break my heart each and every time. As if they are responsible for their injuries -- things like this happen, and ultimately they can become better people for having gone through these difficult times. If they can make it through the injuries and recovery and still finish boot camp, I honestly believe that they will be better prepared to handle the difficulties that will come in their futures. I know that my son sure looks at things differently since boot camp. He really is able to try looking at the big picture and seeing the positive. I just know that your son will get there too. Hang in there Mom!!!
Thank you all for the words of support and encouragement! You know what it does to a mother's heart to think her child is suffering and knowing you can't be there.
My hope is it was a bad day when he called and that's the same day he wrote the letter.
I would never have thought ths Boot Camp would be so hard on me too...my daughter's an Ensign in the Navy but went the way of NROTC...seemed much easier on my emotions.
PeggySueCory... Thanks so much for sharing the info. from your son's letter. It really is wonderful to hear that he is now embracing his experiences while in RCU. Sometimes it takes a little while, but most of the kids can get to that point. Wonderful also to hear that your son will be a Corpsman. My son (who was in RCU from late Dec. to late Mar.) is now at Corpsman A-School in San Antonio. He also used the time in RCU to learn more about what a Corpsman's options can be once A-School is completed -- also, they made him do about a million push ups and sit-ups because they said he would not miss that milestone of the PT since they can do those without putting stress on the legs -- LOL! My son ended up making some great friends while in RCU and he still keeps in touch with them -- even though they are spread out over the U.S. -- they form deep bonds with these other recruits that they wouldn't have in regular boot camp. There can be very positive things that come from RCU.
Two for the Navy... Oh, honey! Your recruit just hasn't gotten to that point where he can see a positive in being in RCU yet. How long after the phone call was that letter written? It could have been the next day, so hopefully he has moved beyond being down about his injury. I know how hard this is on you. Not being able to physically be there for your child is the most difficult thing we moms have to do with this Navy thing. It really is true about the rollercoaster of their (and our) emotions while they are in RCU. Unfortunately, the only real way to find out what is going on is from your SR. Sometimes it takes them a while to accept that they are where they need to be in order to heal and then finish boot camp. I really agree with the other posts that you can help by sending things to encourage your son. [BTW, if you need additional folks to send encouraging stuff, the moms here are always up for it, so let us know] Whatever you do, just remember to let him know that everyone [including the moms here] is so proud of him, the commitment he's made and what he's having to go through to do this makes us all even more proud. I know it's hard to sit and wait, but patience is a virtue -- by the time this is all over you will be sooooooo virtuous that you won't even believe it (okay, I'm just kidding about that, but you will be REALLY good at the waiting game...) Just remember, we're always here for you and anything you need we'll try to help.
Madeline... GREAT NEWS!!! Hopefully you'll be hearing about Kyle moving into Phase 4 and passing the running portion of the thing very soon. YIPEE!!! Phase 4, phase 4, phase 4 [[hoping that the "chant" for that will help move him there quickly ;0) ]]
Patrick's Mom... Thank heavens that you're doing okay now!!! Karen, please rest and take good care of yourself. You know how much we all need you here!!
BoomMom... Is Robert planning to re-enlist? I must have missed that post. Can't wait to hear how he's doing.
ProudMom... Like Paces, looking forward to hearing how she is doing and know that she should really be proud of herself. She tried something very difficult and injuries are something we can't have control over. Please let her know how proud of her that we are here!!!
Paces... Hope your daughter really enjoyed her Karate Camp. It was a long drive, but I'm sure it was worth it, right?
Have a great (and uplifting) week, ladies. Hoping for good news for each of you this week from your SRs.
BIG HUGS!!!
-Janet
Paces / Susan, Thank you for sharing the good news about your son. It gives us a reason to be hopefull for a successful outcome. I do also undertand it might not turn out the way we want it to. Saying prayers for all! Have a great day!
