It's hard not knowing! That is the purpose for this group. Most likely if you are here your SR has had trouble keeping up or not passed a PFA due to some sort of minor medical issue. Often it stress fractures bringing SR's here. Know this when you don’t get a call that is a very good thing. Calling them is not a good thing and it can negatively impact your SR to have his or her “Mommy“ calling! They are harder on them in this DIV than any other. They want them up and out. The best thing you can do is sends tons of mail. Send scripture and motivational mail. I know my SR said reading the Bible was considered a sign of weakness here. When you get a tearful call motivate. Stay positive and encourage you SR. This is a small detour to greatness and getting the I'm a Sailor call! Recruit family and friends…“Navy mom friends are the best“…to send your SR mail as well. NMH for you all!!

boomMom - yes, when I sign my notes, the Pax means peace. It's the way my Grandmother used to sign some of her letters. I adopted the practice. :)
As for my sailor, the official diagnosis was tendonitis, not a strained knee. Still hurts a lot and much rehab to come. I'm not surprised about the reading, he has always loved to read. I'm hoping that the boredom will push him to read stuff outside his comfort zone (SFF). SciFi/Fantasy is a great genre, but there are so many great books out there.
LindenEmry - Great day for you, Abbie!! I still remember...in the distant past...what it was like to get a phone call from my son! lol--sigh I'm happy that you were able to hear from him and find out where in his recovery he is. Is it still strained tendons? Or did the docs find out it was something else? Poor baby has to be REALLY bored if he read ANY book from that list--twice! lol Good job, mom!
Thanks for the update and prayers! :-) Btw, I had to look up what "Pax." meant; I think you used it before and I wasn't sure what it was. Most sites said it was short for passengers, which doesn't fit "in context", but I finally found one that said it is Latin for "Peace". Is that what you mean? Did all you ladies know that already? Ugh! I got to get out more........
I heard from my son today. He will be seeing the doctor on Wednesday when hopefully he will be moving from phase 2 to phase 3. Hopefully he'll be restored to full duty a week or two after that. He was in good spirits but did state he was bored. He's read the book we sent him... twice.
I hope you all had a chance to talk to your sailors too this weekend. I'll keep the prayers rolling for all of our kids.
Pax.
Abbie
Got two letters in the mail today. My daughter says it is her left leg that is hurt. She says she is in alot of pain but i really dont know more than that. tracy03 i know a little of how u feel. My daughter is WAY down. I can hardly stand to read her letters ( it hurts me so much) She wants to come home so, so badly. She says she will call on sunday and like you i have to find the words that will give her the strength to hang in there. She tells me she is scared, but that on her first day there she met a another SR who told her she would help her. That she would be ok. I am so thankful for this young woman support of my daughter. I have Faith that when our phone calls come this weekend (hoping) we will know the right things to say to our sons and daughters to give them strength to keep moving forward and to help them heal. Prayers going up.~ pam
Tracy03, I asked my son if RDC's called them 'cripples' when he was in RCU and he said yes, it was said mostly to those on crutches, usually said in fun and if it bothered you all you had to do was ask them to stop calling you that and they would.
He didn't know anything about it 'being ok to leave with a dishonorable discharge', however, that is just plain wrong information. A dishonorable discharge can only be handed down by a general courts martial and many states consider it the equivalent of a felony conviction with loss of many civil rights.
Many of the SRs who are separated from the Navy for medical reasons (such as my son) received an Entry Level Separation (ELS), or uncharacterized discharge. These are usually given to individuals who separate prior to completing 180 days of military service and doesn't characterize service as good or bad.
I wonder why someone would say such a thing - even as a joke. Wow.
I'm sorry to hear your son is so bummed right now and hope he does get to call you this weekend. Regards, Sharon
OMG! When I first read your post, Tracy, my heart stopped for what seemed like eternity, and then when it started up again, I couldn't stop shaking!! But an angel sent me this pic and a few choice words and now I'm "almost" back to normal. Thank you Ste. Jillian! I owe you lots! I hope it helps calm you other moms out there, because I know what conclusion I had jumped to......I'm praying for all the SR's because it really could have been any one of them submitting to that dreaded "cabin fever" they must be going through. Chin up, boys! (and moms!)
Sorry that your son is having a hard time right now, Tracy, but encourage him in your letter and reassure him that his friend wouldn't want him to give up either. Heck, we all don't want him to quit, okay? Stay strong!
Just one more note... In reading back on these post to the most present i just wanted to say i think ALL of your SR's are so very BRAVE and STRONG. I may not know them but i am very PROUD of them. they're stories told here have given me hope. That which i will pass on to my daughter. Thank You.
Philllies thank u for the encouragement. All of you lady's have been nothing short of AMAZING to me in this short period of time since i found this group. I wish i could give each of u a hug, your SR"s a hug and tell them what wonderful mom's they have. You are ALL in my prayer along with each and every SR. Todays thought for me will be...." Hope is like the sun, Which as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us" I am going to share this with my daughter today in the letter i send. I thought perhaps you may find some strength in it as i have. I hope you all have a GREAT day and will have the chance to so something fun for youself!!! Keep the FAITH sisters.~ Pam
Oh ladies.... I really hope each and every one of you hears from your SR by letter or phone call this weekend. It would certainly give each mom a level of comfort to hear from your SR (and then we would all know what is going on with each of them!) It seems like it's been awhile since anyone has really had some news -- Jill excepted, of course! Jill, The Phase 2 then Phase 4 thing certainly has me confused! I think there are some of the docs that are great and others that might not be taking enough time to know what the problem really is -- just like in the real world, I guess. I am happy that you heard from your son though. I'm sure getting the letter was a huge relief!!
Pam and 1ProudMom... You will definitely have to let us know what happens with the girls side of things. I wonder if it is different from what the boys experience while in RCU. I know that my son ended up making some GREAT friends while in RCU that he still keeps in contact with, so there are definitely some opportunities that can be positive for the kids too. They've been through some of the most trying times of their young lives together while healing in RCU, so those friendships can really have a strong base in that they will have gone through those tough times together. I do hope that your daughters can see something positive in the time they spend in RCU as well.
Karen... You're right, its hard to leave after seeing your son. I feel like I did when he first left for boot camp and it really is weird to feel that I'm going back in time. Garrett is doing well with his studies and likes the Corpsmen classes (so far anyway.) He will be there until at least September, so we'll see how he does ultimately. Can't wait to see those photos as well. I'm sure Patrick looked very handsome -- you have good reason to be a proud mom!!!
BoomMom... Praying especially hard that you'll hear from your SR very soon!! You are such an amazing source of positive energy and support. Reading your posts is ALWAYS a joy!!
Have a wonderful day, ladies. BIG HUGS!!!
-Janet
