MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

hello, my son was in week three at Great Lakes when he was pulled out of his division and told he might have some type of eye condition that he was denied a waiver for. Our Opthomologist here has never seen this condition in our son nor signs that he could develop it. They have told him that he can appeal through the legal process. Is there someone we can contact to help him? We've asked him if there is someone he can discuss this with. Our son is devastated. He has passed his initial PT exam and his first written exam and felt he has handled everything up to this point. Please any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
CodeMansMom, It could be that things can go quickly, but our experience is not one like that. Our son has been in ship 5 since Jan 8. His PIR was 12/29. He is still at THU.... he got the waiver from the doc probably around Jan 20.... Still, he has not moved on... I think he is frustrated, but he has friends there and they all seem to be making the best of the situation. I hope it goes more quickly for your son.
Hello, just joined the group. My son's PIR was 3/30. He is in THU because they found some microscopic blood in his urine around his 3rd week of BC. He is a Nuke and will be going to A school at GC. He went to medical yesterday and was told his new urine test came back negative and it just needed to be signed off on. I know the military is very slow about doing things. Any idea about how long this should take?

does anyone know where I could find the codes they are given medically while in ship 5?
He is not fighting his discharge, his code is RE-3, just waiting to come home.
My son is in SEPS waiting to come home. He had a chest xray done for some reason, it showed a spot on his lung, then they did a CT scan and it showed a mass behind his left lung attached to his spine. He is not receiving any medical care there, I am setting up appointments here with his primary care doctor. He can't get any results from his xrays. I have contacted our representative and both senator in hopes they can speed up his discharge. I plan on making calls to RTC on Monday. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how I can speed up this process.
don't know what happened to that post - from the time she told me she was hurt to the time she told me she was coming home, was the tough for both of us. Everything happens for a reason and I know it will all work out. unfortunately the Navy has it's own little waiting game and on it's own time lines - at least in ship 5 - i get facebook messages. I hope you get to hear from your son soon. I keep hearing no news is good news!!

My son is in ship 5, but not waiting to be separated. He is waiting for orders to go on to BESS, as originally planned. Meanwhile, he has duty days, watch, and free time. He has had a variety of jobs. Cleaning, escorting recruits to appointments, guard duty during PIR and works where they have the various flags... While at that job, he is often asked to help with other things, like moving equipment, etc. He has been able to take a couple of online courses, phased up (liberty wise). He has some evenings and weekends free where he can leave the base. He has made some friends. Now he is figuring out taxes for the first time in his life. THU has rules such that he is allowed his cell phone and computer. He calls/texts when he is off duty and has any news. He also continues fitness training.. and does regular workouts.... He wants to move on, but paper work and red tape seem to keep it from happening. Now he wants his Kindle so we will send that tomorrow.
