MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

Angie, fortunately my daughter graduated from college. Also she will be taken care of because of her injury.

Comment by tks4 on November 26, 2011 at 10:23pm

Moskate, I am sorry your daughter is going through this. My daughter is also going through this. She is home visiting for a week and will return on Wed. Nov. 30th. She started boot camp on March 22nd. She was the one that had her nerve cut while removing her wisdom teeth. Her seperation has taken a long time because she had to go through Med Board first. If you friend me I can tell her who to look for when she gets back. She will understand your daughter's boredom.

Comment by sbarber on November 26, 2011 at 9:41pm

Moskate: That is a good question but, since the recruit isn't able to fulfill the needs of their contract for whatever reason, and its only been a short stint in the Navy I would not imagen they would qualify for unemployment unless they were gainfully employed for several reporting quarters prior to enlisting. Unemployment goes off of previous wage earning quarters.

Comment by Moskate on November 26, 2011 at 8:57pm

Oh..if anyone is reading this:  Question.

Do our recruits qualify for unemployment when they return home?

Comment by Moskate on November 26, 2011 at 8:54pm

My daughter was moved to Ship 5 on Monday, November 21.  She is getting a medical separation RE-3.  She signed legal on November 22. They told her that her paperwork was moving to the Commander's desk for 4 business days.  After he signs it, it would be approximately 7 more days for arrangements to be made to come home.  Legal told her she was on the list for next Friday, December 2 or if that didn't work, Monday.  If it ends up this way, I will be grateful that the Navy followed through on what they told her

Like the other recruits (former recruits), she is a bit frustrated with Ship 5 and trying to adjust.  She made it through 7 weeks of training (3 days before Battlestations) and has learned so much that it frustrates her to be with people that are not doing things the way she is.  I tell her that she just needs to take a deep breath and that coming back to the civilian world won't be much different.  In a new job, she will also need to deal with others that don't do things just like her.  Her bunkmate and her get along well and plan their time at the gym together.  This has helped with the process.

She hasn't received any letters and I know there were at least 3-4 letters in transit when she moved over to Ship 5.  I'm surprised they have not gotten to her yet.  I mailed a letter directly to Ship 5 the day she was there, so hopefully, she will get that letter.

As far as calling....she gets to call every day.  The time is at least 20 minutes.  She signs up for call time and they do not take that away from her.  She calls every day at 1:30pm PST.  I'm so glad I sent her extra calling cards.  Since she was able to move over all of her letters from her original division to her new rack, she had the calling cards in her Knit bag with the letters.  This has given us a sigh of relief since she has no money right now.  She can't find her NEX card that was issued to her.  During the move, apparently, it got "lost" or was taken.

She doesn't get to go outside much.  Only to and from the Chow Hall.  I guess that's okay since it's pretty cold out anyway.  She does get to go the gym, which is good news.

She says that everyone there is in Ship 5 for different reasons, so the emotions run high.  Her and another girl try to let people know to have patience with those that might be crying.  It isn't easy adjusting to the fact that you are no longer going to be in the Navy, no matter what the reason is.  Mutual respect is the best way to get through it.

Hopefully, by sharing what I am experiencing from my daughter, this will help other parents and loved one's should their recruit be moved to Ship 5.  Best of luck to all of us in this emotional time.  All of our recruits were strong enough to get int the Navy and in my case, she got through 7 weeks of Boot camp, so she should do just fine, with time, when she gets home.

A couple lines below what you copied I read the definition of "active duty for training"  It looks to my like boot camp might count. He must have been "full time in the armed forces, other than active duty for training" and active duty for training definition looks like it only excludes reserves.  Am I seeing something wrong?

(22)The term “active duty for training” means—

(A)full-time duty in the Armed Forces performed by Reserves for training purposes;
(B)full-time duty for training purposes performed as a commissioned officer of the Reserve Corps of the Public Health Service
(i) on or after July 29, 1945, or
(ii) before that date under circumstances affording entitlement to “full military benefits”, or
(iii) at any time, for the purposes of chapter 13 of this title;

Thanks for the quick response and links.  I was hoping for more, but that is what I was expecting.

That is a tricky question and a good one for legal and double check with the veteran's admin. The VA has their own rules/criteria for having access to VA benefits. Pls post what you find out either way. Good luck on your son's appeal and our prayers are with your son and your family to keep you all strong.

My son got moved to ship 5 for a medical seperation 5 days before PIR.  He has appealed it and is currently waiting on his appeal.  He says his appeal will go to a Captain for a decision.By the time this happens he will have been in Great Lakes for 2 1/2 to 3 months.  He says that he can appeal the Captain's decision to an Admiral and that this appeal could take up to 4 more months while he just waits in ship 5.

My question:  I have heard that if you are in for at least 180 days that you leave with veterans benefits such as GI Bill, VA loan, etc.  If my son loses his appeal to the Admiral, would he leave the Navy with these benefits if he meets the 180 day requirement?

I just want her to be informed.  No support stinks,.... for her and me.
