MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

NakitaFamily- let us know what happens.Praying for you guys too.
My boy was home sick for almost 12 days after he came home. BAD flu. But back on his feet, unfortunately he missed registration for this semester for college classes. But is planning on going in January. He has his pilots license and plans to continue on in AERONAUTICS. Wants to keep working on his education. Some where along the line he will have to get his knee fixed, but he is not in a hurry for that. Will be getting a re-evaluation from his ORTHO soon. And I just want to settle back into some sense of normalcy. :-)
NavymomPam - Good advice from Tfan2, my son was sent home as well. Not as complicated because it was an injury and he did not see a resolve through appealing. He has to take his chances on RE-3E discharge reentry code.
If your son has nothing in his med records about allergies to the meds he received he should probably file an appeal. It will be easier than re-enlistment with medical waivers. Whatever he decides it is important to support him. Seps (SHIP 5) is not the most pleasant place to be, and it is hard to hear your kids disappointment when they call. Most just say they want out of there, don't let it get the best of you. You can only do so much.He should be able to call EVERYDAY. We forwarded our phone to make sure we did not miss calls. Take note of the information posted for phone numbers to medical and legal, use them if you feel your son is not answering your questions on the progress of his status. (please remember to be polite) makes a difference in how your call is received. Keep reminding your son he is still a NAVY SR. He must not show his disappointment or any inability to cope or discuss with anyone, and I mean anyone but you. It can easily be misinterpreted as a MENTAL CONDITION or INSTABILITY and possibly contribute to his discharge. Read past posts on this. The older more mature SR seem to do better than the younger ones who have little experience away from home.
Use this site to educated yourself and let your boy know he is not alone. Strength and patience is the key to a good outcome. Wish your son did not have to go through this.
You have friends here and prayers are coming your way... hang in there.
I check in here 1 or 2 times a week, or when there are new comments.
Let me know if I can help in any way. And don't let my comments scare you, you have more control than you think. Ask questions and fight for your son's right to be a sailor!
My son was about 20 days from pir. He had been doing very well. From what I understand, he get an ear ache and he was sent to the dr. THey gave him several different meds. By the time he got back to the div., he was going into anaphylactic shock. They have now said he is being sent home. Can someone please tell me if this sounds right. I really need some advice
isc1113114- what your son is saying and what happen with my daughter is EXACTLY what happen to her. She wish she would of chosen to talk to the chaplin or a CARE counselor. Once they start talking to a "shink" they get "labeled". She had a lot going on too (I have said this before) homesickness, a bad pap-had to have further test (everything ok now), dealing with someone she knows that killed themselves (I wanted to "kill" the person that wrote to her and told her). She now sz's she wish she would of never gone to see shink-they have you come back, several times. I also wish she would of stayed and gotten a 2nd opinion. But, she hated ship 5 and wanted out of there. I think they try their hardest once kids end up in ship 5 to get them out. There are so many "disorders" that they come up with. I know one person ask a kid that was homesick, "Have you ever been depressed, or sad"? well kids will answer yes---haven't we all been depressed or sad at one time in our lifes? I think we need to make it a point to sometimes to try and tell the new SR's going in, to NOT go see a counselor if offered. Try and suck it up or chose the chaplin/CARE person. It's ok when they get there (BC) that they are going to be tired/scared and wonder what the hell they got themselves into. IT will get better. I agree DEPERS should be warn---. One person wrote and said that they came to the kids and ask, if anyone who was homesick wanted to go see a counselor-6 went-6 didn't come back. I hope your son is granted his appeal. I know ship 5 isn't a fun place to be, but if he really wants to stay in Navy, he needs to stay there and fight it. Not to come home and try. HUGS and thoughts are with you and him. I have learn so much and we would of done things MUCH diffently IF we would of been able to read what goes on here. I just want to help others from not making the same mistake. Take care
