MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

Don't be sorry for going on and on itsmemom...your info is very informative.
It IS best to appeal when you are still there with these kinds of possible seperations.
cinny66 - I have the same question...did you mean PTSD?
Comment by itsmemom on August 16, 2011 at 9:40am
Hi cinny--not sure what PTAD is (I saw your post in bc mom)-is it PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder)?  First of all we all what to say how sorry we are that this has happen to her.  Second, does she want to try and stay in the service? If so she can try and appeal the separation. Are you autorize to talk to people there about what is going on? If not have her sign the waivers to allow you to talk to people there about what is going on.  Also, if she decides she wants to try and stay in tell her NOT to sign any of the papers to have her separated. She may want to ask for a 2nd eval. There are kids that get sent to the "shink" in the first few days or weeks, they are tired (no sleep), homesick etc. In turn they are told that they are: depress, personality disorder, etc. Think about it you: leave home, you are scared, no sleep for 3 days, your are yelled at---etc. Now, they may be crying etc. Its a hard adjustment.  So then they are ask--, "do you want to talk to someone"-. Anyways, she will probably be able to call you once a day-(at least my daughter was able to).Ask her what happen, and if she wants to try and appeal it.  Ship 5 isn't a "fun" place to be.  Make sure she has $ on her calling card. The payphones are $$$. I think my daughters phone calls each day for about a hour cost her around $4. She will be there appox. 10-12 days. So it does get costly. Plus my daughter was able to use the internet which cost $5 for 50 min. and it was a slow connection. Now my daughter had actually did PIR so she may of been able to have more privledges. In ship 5 there isn't much to do, they really can't go outside, unless they signed up to do "work party" where they  basically go around and help clean up the base. My daughter said ship 5 was like being in a dentist office waiting room 24/7. Old magazines, a few books, not a lot to do. Read thru some of the old post here. I offered my daughter a lot of support. She was told she could go home and fight this, and come back in. Well, that really isn't true----it is almost impossible to fight it from home. Look in this group for posts from the a former Sep. Admin. he has a lot of good info. I really wish I knew what I knew now, and maybe my daughter would of still been in the Navy.  She also wish she would of NEVER gone to see a "shink" when she was there. Better to see the CARE person or a chaplin. She knows she probably could of won her appeal-since she had PIR'd and even a few people were ? why she was in ship 5, but she didn't want to spend any more time in ship 5, and was told (and thought) she could do this all from home. I am sorry for going on and on. The best you can do is support her, encourage her, and if she wants to appeal-you can help her. If she comes home just be there for her. I know a lot of people in this group will be giving you good advice. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. Take care

I am not sure. I got it from his recruiter. He just said RE 3.
Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on August 12, 2011 at 8:14pm
Is it an RE3E?
Comment by Eskimokiss3s on August 12, 2011 at 6:42pm
@ fireteamleaderwife- he has an RE Code of RE 3.
Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on August 12, 2011 at 6:04pm
Hi Eskimokiss3s. I accepted your friend request. Tfan2 is asking you a lot of good questions already.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that your sons bunion is going to be considered a preexisting condition. So he will probably get an RE code that is going to require a waiver to get back into service.
All the marching, running, wearing boots must be aggravating it. So sorry. Get the waivers,,,it can't hurt to know what is going on.
When you find out what code they are using for reentry please let me know.

No worries, I should know better then to assume..LOL. My SR is my son! My son was separated for exercise induced asthma. It will take about 7- 12 days give or take for the process if he does not appeal the separation. We are here for you if you have questions or just want to talk. :) ~Tena
Comment by Eskimokiss3s on August 12, 2011 at 5:03pm
My SR is my fiance, sorry I should have told you. Yes, MEPS recorded it in his records. I talked to his recruiter and he gave me the RE Code my SR needs. So when I talk to him next i'll let him know what I've found out. Hopefully he hasn't signed any separation papers yet. Thank you for the welcome!  My fiance left 7/27 for BC.
Comment by TFAN2 on August 12, 2011 at 3:47pm
Jenny, first off I should have said welcome to our "not so little" group. I am sorry to hear that your son has been sent to Ship 5. That being said, when you talk to your son next, hopefully tomorrow ask him if he signed a medical waiver and a legal waiver. It will allow you to call and speak with the Seperations people on his behalf. Did your son disclose the bunion issue on his enlistment papers? If he did and it is something that he can work thru and he really wants to stay in then he can file an appeal. Read thru the previous posts from this group to give you more info. Separations are REALLY hard to fit but is best chances are to fightnit while he is still in Great Lakes. There isn't much you can do until Monday but research this site but then you will be ready for Mon. When did your son get to boot camp? ~Tena
Comment by Eskimokiss3s on August 12, 2011 at 3:26pm
He just got to ship 5 last night. This morning he didn't mention anything about signing waivers. His bunion bothers him off an on, but he works it out and is fine afterwards.- Jenny
