MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

Woo-Hoo NakitaFamily!

Looking forward to hearing updates. I am so glad for the friends and all the help received here. I would have been a total basket case. (Believe me- It's not pretty)

I gave my son a quick peek of life on my side during all of this... :-)

All he could say was "Really appreciate everyone looking out for us, but you know mom we really were ok. It wasn't THAT bad."

My comment was "You were ok because we moms always have your backs."

Did I miss something in all those conversations?

To those who are still waiting for resolve, Hang in there. And I will be praying daily for all you you and if I can be of any help, please let me know. I am hanging around for a while.  Hugs to all of you.

Nakita, FTLW, Tfan, thanks for everything, your encouragement and friendship is priceless!

PDP and Tfan2-that is great!...and what is important. As Craig said...you can't let you life revolve around it. Support is really all we can give, advice if they ask. It is there life and they need and WANT to make the decisions.

I am very glad that both of your sons spirits are good and that they have goals and are moving forward.

You should be proud...you've obviously "done good"!

Oh and please thank them from another American for WANTING to serve their country in the military!

PDP-Enjoy your wonderful dinner!

PDP. Good for you!!!! Supporting their decision is the best thing for them!!! My son also learned a lot in the short time he was there. He told me, mom I will ask for help if I need it but this is something I have to do on my own. So proud that he is being a man and is taking charge and being responsible. This is also becoming a rarity, that kids are willing to stand on their own two feet and be responsible for their decisions/life. Keep up the good work!!! ~Tena

My son is home. He has a lot of decompressing to do I'm sure. The hardest part for me is trying to get family to understand they need to back off and let him work through this. The should support him, but stay out of the decision making process.

This is his life, not mine, not his dad's, not Auntie or grandma or Uncle Joe's. If he wants back in he will fight that battle when he is ready. Either way, I will support his choice. Getting a second opinion for him, or an appeal was not what he wanted to do because it would only delay his getting care.  While there at Ship 5 he said he learned a lot. If he comes out with a positive attitude and his pride intact, I am happy for him. He has already made plans for when he gets home, with the Navy a possibility. He is not coming home feeling defeated or like he could have done more.

I hope for others that have come home or are coming home have goals to seek. Mine said he will go back to school and pick up where he left off.

I am proud of him.

To all the moms, all of our kids can hold the head up high cuz they all tried to serve and were not able due to issues beyond their control!!!! I am very proud of mine and proud to know so many other moms who's kids tried too!!! ~Tena

Craig thanks for the info my son just called and said he talked to the DR and she told him that if we got another DR to say she was wrong she would change his diagnosis so I will make him an appointment with a specialist and hope for the best

Nakita - I know AdminSeps knows this way more than I, but I have found that writing your congressman or senator does nothing.  All they do is send a congressial inquiry to Great Lakes, and they in turn respond with a form letter saying it was justified. This is just cut and dry.  Correct me if I'm wrong AdminSeps...

The only hope I see for most of you guys is to fill out a DD-293, saying that the discharge was in error.  This is the only way to get it corrected, but it has to be an error and you must have lots and lots of documentation.  This stuff about being able to join back up in 6 months is wrong.  Like AdminSeps says, that is the soonest you can apply.  It takes over a year to process the paperwork.

I have a guy on my website that has been fighting this for about 2 years now. He has now moved on with his life and decided to serve his country as a police officer.  The time spent to correct a record could be spent learning something else.  I'm not saying to not get it corrected, what I'm saying is don't revolve your life around it.  Take control, and keep moving down the road.  There are lots of different angles you can do to help our country.

You guys really have a hard and long road to travel. It's not an easy process, and the results are usually not good. However, what do you have to lose to try? Nothing!.... So work the issue and get your ducks in a row. Here are two website. Even though the Navy Discharge Board can't really help, it has good info. I like how they (the discharge review board) say to go to AL or DAV, which for you guys would be a good idea.
