MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

Craig My son is on his way home today he hurt his back in basic and when it did not get better the put him in seperations under a mental disorder I am trying to fight it but keep getting the run around so I hav involved my congressman in this I cant believe I have to pay doctors locally to prove that his back is hurt.

SepsAdmin - Outstanding response.... Thanks for the key pieces of the puzzle.

One more question -

-  Being a sailor, I personally can accept and try to help those recruits that have a medical or mental condition that have prevented them to become sailors.  It's just the cards that God has dealt them.  They have no control over that.

However, I cannot accept a person that just doesn't want to be in the military just because it's more comfortable at home.  ie not a medical or mental issue.

So, when a recruit is in Ship 5, do they treat these sailors the same or differently? (ie the ones that have medical issues, opposed to those that just don't want to be in the Navy)

By this I mean,  I have seen those that just don't want to be in the Navy on hold in Great Lakes and will never get out before their original PIR date.  It seems like the Navy is trying to send a message saying "the easy way out of RTC Great Lakes is to successfully complete the program".

Do tell....

My son said that they gave him a 3-ring binder full of the letters that we all had sent.  No they have not already agreed to it. My son either has requested it or is in the process of requesting it.  I will follow up with legal about the letters.  Thank you for your info.
Comment by magnoliagirl1963 on August 5, 2011 at 2:39am
Thank you SepsAdmin:  All the documents were faxed to legal.  And I know that they did receive them.  They told my son that his next step is to get a second Medical Evaluation.  So are you saying that the Commanding Officer will get and/or see the letters that we faxed to legal?  If so then I won't fax them again, or should I still try?
Comment by magnoliagirl1963 on August 5, 2011 at 2:18am
PDP:  Yes, it is an RE3E code that the "legal" person told him he needs to try to get.  But from what I've read about that, its no better than an RE4.  Yes, he has signed the waivers and forms for us to communicate and get medical info.  Seps Admin:  how do I get a fax number to the commanding officer.

SepsAdmin...please don't leave! There has been an increase.

I "stumbled" onto here as I just wanted to see if I could help a couple of moms that I had friended on the PIR groups (my main haunt usually!)...but I have NO idea what I am doing. I went to Craig (Craig, thank you!) for where to go look info up as I had seen some posts where he was helping another mom in a PIR group I believe.. I didn't want to drag him over here as I know he is busy with his other sites...'sides I am a big girl and can look stuff up!

Your answers have been helpful...and Craig...thank you for asking questions that really need answers!

Mostly, I can just search for info, ask questions and encourage the recruits and moms to fight if they feel it is necessary...and pray.

Thanks for the info.  Craig 6, I also have wondered the answer to your first question for sure.
Comment by Craig on August 5, 2011 at 12:09am

SepsAdmin - I haven't posted on this thread before, but I do look at the info you provide, which is awesome.    I actually own two Navy forum websites myself, so I'm pretty much up on all of this, but I have questions that I still don't know.

Since you were once a cog in the big wheel of admin separations I'd like to ask some questions.   I don't believe in sugarcoating things, but I don't want to put you on the spot either.  So if I ever step over that line, just let me know...

Here are the question I have:

  • When a sailor is put into Ship 5, what percentage (just a wild @ss guess) of recruits get appeals approved and can regroup and continue on with basic training?
  • What are the percentage (another WAG) of sailors that are orginally issued a RE-4, to get them upgraded to RE-3's or RE-8's while at Great Lakes?
  • Why do they tell these sailors that they can request a waiver "in six months" to return to the armed services?  (yea, you can also put in a chit to request to become CNO, but we know that won't happen either).
  • Why does the Navy fly the sailor to Great Lakes, however, if they are place into the separation barracks, they sometimes make them take the bus home?  (basically why do they treat them as second rate citizens, when they could as easily fly them back home).

Again, I know these are hard questions, and I don't want these moms to dog you, because you are just the messenger.

Hey Magnoliagirl,I wouldn't waste time writing letters I would be calling my congressmans office or showing up on their doorstep and yes contact your sons recruiter. This all really sucks! If your son truely wants to stay then you and him need to fight!Unfortunately that means more time in ship 5 but go for it. Also look back at some of the previous postings by fireteamleaderswife they will be very helpful.Hang in there and fight like hell!             -Ruth

Magnoliagirl ... I am so sorry to hear about your story. You are probably taking the right steps to sort it all out. Have you spoken to anyone in legal yet? They are there to make sure your son has all his rights explained to him and you if he has signed wavers to release information to you. Has he signed the waver for HIPPA ? Medical will not tell you anything unless he has. Again legal can assist you here. I had to contact them 2 times and both times they were professional and helped me get my answers. You may also want to contact his recruiter to see if he can assist in any way. Your son should be able to appeal his discharge. Again legal should be able to assist.  I am just another Mom here with a son who had an injury and  is coming home with an RE3E code. I have not heard of an E3 code. Can not comment on that. Please take down the information above on this page for contact numbers. If you wan to remove any comments, just click on the x at the top right corner.  I have had to do this a couple of times after rethinking.  Please ask any questions, none are dumb. And there are many on this site with similar stories.

Hang in there, my prayers go out for you and your son.
