MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

I know I haven't been much help...I am sooooo glad to see you all sharing deeper about your stories. This is how others will know what to do.
You don't expect something like this to happen...and you REALLY don't expect it to go the way it does. Going through the enlistment process was a lot for me. Why would we even think of researching possible discharge and the ALL the information that goes along with that. By the time the recruits loved ones find out the process has been started. Damage has been unknowingly done, as in your daughters case itsmemom-how would she have KNOWN that beforehand?! She wouldn't.
jsc-I am so glad you called your Congressman and they have instructed you. Fight...I will pray for you and your son. It will not be easy...but if he really wants it...fight.
NakitaFamily-I will keep you and your son in my prayers. Also your recruiter that he fights to get your son back in.
It seems like contacting your Congressman is a VERY good way to go. My husband always says that to me when I discuss some of this and it just soinds plain wrong (he has 27 years military reserves under his belt, 2 deployments). I am going to tell that to EVERY new mom/recruit on this group who is willing to fight.
I am truly sorry this is all happening and I will keep you all in my prayers.

Hi PDP-wouldn't forget you!
lauren- Unfortunately, I am thinking you are VERY right! I have heard that too. You need an RE1 basically.
Then I saw the Reentry Code Chart (and was hopeful)
It is listed on the reentry code chart that you can reenlist IF you can get a waiver for an RE3E (there are two RE3 codes that are completely ineligible-A and C) but it seems like they provide stipulations (probably in the remarks area of the DD-214) negating that, depending on the "medical issue".
Here is the link to the Unclassified document (It's on the net):
http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/publications/Directives/1130_8J%20VOL%20IV...
Go to page 209.
That's probably why it's a good reason to fight it IF you can. I know that's easy for me to say sitting here in my chair, typing on a computer.
If I can get any information for you I will try as best as I can.
I know that the SepsAdmin (ex) pops in here to advise still once in a while too.
In the meantime...I will do the only thing I can right now which is pray for you all.

You can fight this...here is one mom and recruit that did. It was not for psychological issues but is about appealing and winning. They fought hard. Here is a link to her post on this Discussion Forum up above.
http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ship17moms/forum/topics/updated-do...
I have not been through this and so cannot "know" what you are going through. I don't know anybody personally that has gone through this...I would just like to help in any way I can.
I am seeing a lot of RE3E reentry codes. It says that it is, "Ineligible to reenlist without a NAVCRUITCOM waiver". Which SHOULD mean you can reenlist with a waiver. However, there is obviously criteria to meet to get the waiver...and then I am seeing that even with the RE3E code one mom was told by the recruiter that her child could NOT reenlist. So, I don't get it.
From BUPERS (Bureau of Naval Personnel)
>>RE-3 Eligible for reenlistment except for disqualifying
factor. Add letter to indicate status at time of
separation:
An RE3E is : (BUPERS)
>>RE-3E Inducted/Enlisted/Extended/Reenlisted in error.
So I am guessing that it is a "common" code used and then there are comments that are added on the DD-214 (discharge papers) that are making reentry ineligible.
When recruits are discharged from BC they do not receive an "honorable, general etc" discharge as character of service. It is "Uncharacterized Entry Level Seperation".
The one code that you do not want is an RE4. This is ineligible for reentry.
Yeah, it's hard to explain to a kid what to do.
I'm going to tell my daughter to tell the shrink that she was just homesick and wishes she'd never said anything and regrets going home. I don't know if she'll listen to me - she's a stubborn 17 year old.
I guess, but it's a long uphill battle.
I'm going to do all I can to fight it. Right now our SRs aren't concentrating on that and it'll have to be fixed after they get home. She never had any history either, but all it takes is the shrink asking "Were you ever depressed or sad before?" and the kids, being teenagers, answering honestly. Who hasn't been sad? That'll go in their permanent records and will bite them in the future.
I'm going to tell my daughter to NOT see any shrinks while she's in ship 5 and just concentrate on getting home. This is a mess and I am SO ticked off!
