MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

itsmemom, my son was week 3 day 5 when he was sent to Ship 5, just this last fri. today is his 3rd day in ship 5. he said the RDC's are pretty nice until the kids that are causing problems start in then the RDC's get crabby. My son is so discouraged too that he just wants to come home now asap.  He knows if he tries to appeal it they are gonna make him wait in ship 5.

That stinks Tfan---my daughter got to keep all of her things-hanging in closet, however she actually finished and did PIR than was separated 3 days after PIR. I do agree they treat the kids in ship 5 like they are prisoners. I can understand that if they are there because of something they did illegally. But they are all treated the same. I wonder if some of it is because they DON'T want the kids to fight the SEPS  and make them miserable. I know my daughter could of fought hers (and probably would of won) but she couldn't stand the thought of being in Ship 5 for a month or so, and besides the fact she thought she would of lost her rate since her class would of started and she could of been put into something else.

How long was you son in BC for?

I was able to talk to my son again today. He says he is doing ok but his voice says a whole other story. Then he told me today that they are sending him home in sweatpants and a sweatshirt. He says he doesn't get to keep any of his stuff no dress whites or anything. It's not like our kids went to boot camp and screwed off or caused problems!!!!  They are being discharged for medical conditions that are out of their hands! I told my son it was ok just as long as he gets home safe and sound I will be happy but it just burns me up that they are treating him like this.

Happy to hear your son sounds great.Unfortunately mine sounds awful,he has said ship 5 is like a prison and he hates it.On top of that he feels like hes getting sick agaln and won't say anything for fear of being there longer.

T...how is your son doing? -Ruth

Hey Tfan2...My name is Ruth, my son was sent to med ship 5 and also is being sent home.Iv'e done some research and the one code you absolutely don't want is an RE4,that means they can never get into any branch at all.My son is getting a RE 3E which from what I've read and what they've told me he can get back in after med clearence after 6 mos, but from what I'm hearing on N4Ms it's very hard to get back in.I'm waiting for them to send someone home for a hang nail. Does your son have asthma???My son has also told me that ship 5 is like a prison which I'm really not happy about.I'm sorry to hear about your son, mine was to PIR the same day,I know it really sucks.Keep me posted and I will send you a friend request.Hang in there! -Ruth

Ruth, I feel for you and your son. My daughter went into the Navy in March, did PIR in May and 3 days after her PIR she was separated. Long story. Anyways he will be there a few weeks, and he probably will be so bored.  They get time to use the internet $$ ($5 for 50 min) and she was allowed to call home almost everyday. and we talk for almost a hour. But, that got to be costly too (I think she said that was another $5 or so a day). She went thru some $$$ while there. They really aren't allowed outside, or vistors. But, what she did the last few days was "work party" Basically, I guess you get to go around with a group of people and pick up the grounds. She said that was ok, got her out and made the day go faster. She said being in Ship 5 was like being in the dentist waiting room 24/7.  Good luck---Thoughts are with you and your son

You will feel much better once you talk to legal and find out what is going on. The hardest There is such a wide range of emotional well being of the SR in ship 5. Some are truly depressed. (The weirdest thing for me is when my son told me they had taken away is shoe laces - part of suicide prevention). The biggest problem there is boredom. Please let us know how your son is doing.
