MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

mama bear -  ship 05 is for sr who are being separated from the Navy.  I believe ship 04 is sick bay. Does anyone know for sure?

Hi, not sure this is where I should be but my daughter is in the medical holding area but she said she is on SHIP 04, div 2341.  She has stress fractures in bothe femurs, one shin and one foot.  She developed amenia and low heart rate when trying to pass her running test.  What is the difference between ship 4 and 5 and how long can they be there

Hi Pam,  I hope things work out for your daughter. Mine said Ship 5 there wasn't much to do. Old magazines, puzzles with pieces missing. Felt like it was being in a dentist office waiting room 24/7. The use of the internet got $$ and so were the phone cards. She did get a hour phone call home, but we figured that was costing appox. $3-$4 a day.  And some days when they were allowed to call we were all at work.  What she did do, was to do "work party" I guess this is where you can go outside and do things around the base.  Not sure what she did, but said she like it, it made the day go faster.  Again her biggest complaint was the cost using the internet (I think she got to use it more, because she actually did PIR), She also made a comment that they couldn't always use the lounge---only if they told them it was unsecured.  Meaning yes, they could go in and sit on sofas and chairs.  I hope your daughter stays in. I really wish mine did, Not sure what she is going to do.  Take care---

I talked to my daughter this morning.  she had a meeting with JAG yesterday.  She signed all the paperwork for dad and I to be able to talk to them.  She also signed paperwork saying that she intends to fight this.  I asked her out ship 5 is to her because I had read so many 'horror' stories in here.  She said it's really not that bad.  she said she misses being in class/PT but there isn't as much 'yacking' back and forth between the divisions (negative)..saying the recruits seem to get along better in ship 5.  She has another appointment on Monday with her attorney and they are preparing an appeal to the CO.

itsmemom - I think they have to be in for 180 days to receive any benefits.  : (  It's very difficult when your child is so excited to be doing something that they think will benefit them and the country and all of a sudden they are told that they are going home.  My son was in boot camp last fall and was sent to ship 5 for a hearing problem.  He was sent home in November.  He had his ears cleaned out this last spring, had a hearing test yesterday and we now believe he is within the proper hearing range.  He went to see his recruiter and submitted the paperwork today to try and get back in.  But it was such a simple thing to do and I don't understand why it was not tried in boot camp.  But then they have so many people trying to join that I think they are looking for any excuse to discharge people.  But you are right, ship 5 is the worse.  I hope all of you have your children home soon.

Blu and I 'met' in 09/213 'room' because our daughters are in the same ship and were to graduate together.  Now BOTH of our daughters are ship mates in Ship 5!  I was called Wednesday from my daughter saying she is in separation.  Seems that a psych eval was done and some 300 question test was able to DECIDE she has ADHD (even though she had ADD years ago and has been off meds for well over a year) and that this psych seems to think by this questionaire she 'lied' on her papers and didn't admit she had ADHD....she never lied.. she told her recruiter early on she had ADD but was med free as well as she told the psych this!  Needless to say, she was moved to ship 5.  She met with JAG today because she intends to fight this with all she has!  She has never been more passionate about anything in her young life, and succeeding at.  She worked for months to get ready for boot camp and kept talking about wanting to make the Navy a career!  She was to sign the waivers/hepa paperwork with JAG today so I and / or her dad can call and get info and plead her case.  I agree with the comments being made that they don't know what fine sailors they are losing in these kids being sent home for STUPID things, yet keeping the ones that are known trouble makers.

Carolyn,  I am so happy to hear your daughter made it home!  I agree that the Navy lost some great sailors. I just think its terrible that when these kids are sent to Ship 5 thru no fault of their own---ie being sick, injured etc, that they should be treated better. I wish her the best--I will "talk" to you soon. I hope she was in long enough where she got at least some benefits.  Mine was not ;-(
Comment by Valtameri on June 3, 2011 at 6:26pm

I hope that you don't mind that I joined the list. I kept finding myself here because I would see an interesting mom on the list and then ... her recruit would end up here! I would come back and check in to see how people were doing often enough that I just decided to join. I wanted to say that I am sorry to hear your stories.

Carolyn -- I am happy that your daughter is home, and I'm sure you are right that the Navy just lost a good sailor.

The Navy has lost many reat sailors because of their bureaucracy.  Yes, I am a little bit bitter.
