MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

Hi Carolyn, My daughter arrived home today, she is glad to be back. Almost didn't get in today. The flight that they had her scheduled on was canceled (weather) but she actually got on standby on a earlier flight in.

She told your daughter that you and I have talk on NFM website---I guess they both laugh about that.

My daughter talk a little about life on "Ship 5". Old magazines, old books, a radio. She said being there was like being in a dentist waiting room 24/7. Not a lot to do. Mine did volunteer to do "work party" so she could get outside.  I will

talk more to her later about how things were.  I will keep you and your daughter in my thoughts and hope she is home soon.  And that she recovers from everything. Please keep us updated.

I am really excited for all of you having your kids home finally. I can't wait for my daughter to come home. We had some good news this week and if it pans out she might be home next week. I am weary about counting on that though, I will keep you all informed.

Hi Carolyn & everyone, Just talk with my daughter she is coming home on Thursday. She sounded a little better today. Said that she did some sort of work detail-which she didn't mind, got outside. Also, said she tried arranging a meeting with some higher up, but I don't think it's going to happen. Also, said while on work detail, she saw one of her petty officer's and told him what had happen - he told her he thought that was bs, and she was a good recruit. Was also inform it may be up to a year before she can go back in, since she is a "vet" (without the benefits) since she completed bc. Not sure what she is going to do with her future, right now just needs to come home.

I am praying for your daughter to come home also.  I hope you have some insurance that can help you with her.  It is so sad they they all have all these hopes and dreams, and they are now gone.  I have learn so much in the last few weeks about how the military treats our kids. They "replace" them so quickly. I just feel for so many of the ones they let go mentally and emotionally.  Plz keep us updated on how she is doing.  Take care!

She has to be fit for travel.....and no they won't take care of her because she supposedly had a pre-existing condition. Ostio-penia...My daughter fought the diagnosis and they did all the testing and did find low bone density (which if you checked all young women of her age you would probably find this condidtion). Now they are telling her if I make an appointment for her with a podiatrist here at home between June 15-30th she can come home on the 10th. YAY :) but now I have to figure out how to pay for all of this. It would be good though to have her home.

carolyn,  Why are thinking that she is going to be there another 2 to 3 months? They just don't want to send her out? Or do they have to "fix" her before they can release her?  If she got better would they let her back into the Navy?

I think I am going to make calls to see if she can have her phone. It is actually there-was told @ pir she was only going to be on a med hold then would be going over to A school. That while in hold no calls but could text as long as it was kept on the DL. After we left GL is when she was told she was goij to be put in seps. I do beliebe these kids should b allowed to have phones during certain times. tthe pay phones & internet are a rip off

My daughter says that her Dr.is actually a PA. She had a different Dr. that she talked to that gave her some hope and than she was sent back to the PA who seems to not know anything about her 13 stress fractures and how to heal them. I was transferring money to my daughters account and noticed a lot of $5 dollar expenses that must be the internet that you speak of. What a rip off, if she had her iphone she could get on the internet for free and call out for free. Not that I don't have to pay for the service but it is a lot cheaper than what she has now. I wonder if there is someone I could talk to there, maybe she can use it during her time she usually gets to be on the phone or internet and then put it away. I guess not many of you know the answer to this because your kids are having a liitle bit easier time leaving the hell hole than my daughter (not that your situation isn't hard enough). As I said before it looks like it might be another 2 to 3 months. Cross your fingers.

Carolyn,  I am glad you got to talk to your daughter, I only got a short time on Sunday talking with mine.  Those pay phones are $$$ and a rip off. A number of years ago we had a friend that own a pay phone business. He made good money off these phones, and the business's also got a % of the money used on those phones. So you know the navy is making $$$$. They probably own the phones too. Also, they sell the phone cards. Think PROFIT!!! From what I could figure out these cards are $15 for 300 min. I guess that is .05 cents a min. that hour call cost those kids $3!!! -- if she called everyday and talk for 1 hr---thats $90! Not incl. the connection charges!  I guess if she is going to be there awhile, go to Costco or someplace and buy cheaper ones. --and the internet is somewhere else they get these kids---$5 for 50 min!  What a rip off!

I have a friend whose son did Army boot camp, they were allowed to have cell phones---only they kept them lock up, and got them when they could make calls.  I think Airforce can keep phones too.

Anyways, I hope something is done about your daughter soon.  Mine is hoping to come home this week. Thru a friend she said the list goes up tonight who is going home this week.

We are trying to find out more on what happen with her case. I want to know WHO saw my daughter, what his degree is, WHY when she requested after the 2nd time talking with him wanted someone else, WHY was she denyed-said she didn't feel comfortable talking with him  and WHY someone that she NEVER saw stamp her paper work for separation-and let her do PIR.  They may send her home, but this isn't over!

Comment by Carolyn on May 23, 2011 at 1:54pm
My daughter is still at ship 5, I talked to her this weekend. I wish she could use her cell phone, the payphones costs $$$$. Its worthit though just to hear her voice. She is waiting for the Medical board to get back to her, they are going to say whether the Navy will take care of her. They say it can take up to 3 months.....As you all know ship 5 is not a good place mentally and my little tough girl is holding on she said she has read every book they have and is ordering books from Amazon. I am sending her some Art supplies so she can do some Art therapy. I hope all goes well for all of you who's children get to go home. I can't wait for that phone call, but the longer she is there it might all be worth it if she gets the GI bill and is concidered a Veteran to get medical benefits. But really not worth it to go through all of the crap they have to go through. Thanks for all you do :)
