MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

Hi -- well my daughter is still in Ship 5, hoping to get out of there by middle of week. She sounds so sad---that place is awful. She was getting one hour phone calls, but said the last few days they can't go to phone room because they are stripping the floors. Whatever phone she used today was limited to 20 min. and only a few people could make their calls. She did say tomorrow they are going to NEX where she can place call, but may be mid day---when we are all are at work. I may be able to talk for a few minutes, but not like we would like to. What I think stinks is that these kids are being treated like prisoners.  She actually has her cell phone with her, thinking when we left she was on a med hold for a few days. But, can't use it. Instead she (and others) have to use the pay phones-which of course is a money maker. LIke the internet---what a rip off. In the Army, the kids can bring their cells to boot camp, they are lock up and given to them when they are allowed to call. The kids are going home, why aren't they given more support. Perhaps some group consuling. These kids, thru no fault of their own are being sent home, feeling like they mess up, and now are feeling worse because they are treated like prisoners.  Prisoners even get visitors! I can't wait for her to get home, and give her a big hug.  We are proud of her that she tried, and she did complete Battle Stations and did graduate. It's just sad that the Navy doesn't care what they do to these kids

Angela - My son was also told that he has to include it on his resume and applications as well.  I think it has really hurt him when he has been looking for a job.  Coming home has been bittersweet.  He feels bad that he cannot find work and doesn't really know how to handle it all.  They try so hard to destroy their spirit when they are there.  It is criminal.

Just checking back in...

Navy/AirForce Mom - glad to hear your son came home.  Hoping he is fine and healthy and ready to move on with his life.  Please let us know.

itsmemom - Praying for your daughter that she will be able to come home this week as you noted.

carolyn - I am so sorry for your daughter that they are still holding her in GL.  Absolutely, NO one should be there for that long.  It really is just disgusting what is happening to her.  I pray that a decision is made to allow her to come home as soon as possible!

mrs.baseball - I just read what happened to your son and all of his health problems.  I feel so bad for him and hope he returns to good health very soon.

For all of our children, I wish them a bright and healthy future.  They are all very strong to have put up with the s**t they had to endure and still come out of it fairly whole!

With the economy the way it is, it is virtually impossible for them to even find p/t work.  Plus @ ship 5 my daughter was told that she HAS to include the fact that she was in the Navy and received a medical separation.  I personally wouldn't include it, but I think the brainwashing got to her and she is afraid not to include it.  Has anyone else been told the same thing about having to include that information?

I got to visit my daughter the weekend she was supposed to graduate for 1 hour on Friday and 2 hours on Saturday. This happened only because I called legal. We are from Oregon, I already had the tickets to go there so I went blind hopeing to see her. She had an escort that brought her to the NEX we had a nice time. Thanks for all of your comfort here :D it is making it easier on me. I don't think anything we say or do will make it easy on my daughter. I am sending her stuff to draw with etc. She can get on the Internet for $1 for 10 minutes and she calls her dad ( in Texas ) and me every day, she splits the hour with us.

Carolyn, I feel for your daughter, mine sz she knows who she is.  I hope your daughter gets out soon. Have they let you go visit her? How far are you from base, will they let you come get her? Mine may be coming home the middle of he week  All she wants is out! Even though we are questioning her one code, and would like some more info before she leaves, She hates it there

. I am trying to make arrangements for her brother to get her laptop to her. We left it in Chicago with him when we were at PIR, thinking she was going to be in temp. hold than ship over to her A school this week. I am told that security is very tight on base and we may have to have it ship home. Which is $$$$$."Funny thing" is that he could take the Metra to GL and hand it to someone right there.  Also, we were on the base all 3 days last weekend and she had her liberty at the NEX. I can't see why (even with a escort) that they can't let her meet him to get it. But one of the people I spoke with today, MAY be able to meet him somewhere to get it. She is going to take class's when she comes home and needs it.

Carolyn, I am so sorry.  That is way too long to be in SEPS.  My son was there for almost 30 days and it was awful for him.  He has been home since the end of October and is still struggling with what to do with his life.  He is going to school but cannot seem to find a job anywhere.  It is very hard.  He will never forget how awful it was there.  Nobody should be treated like that and torn down so far.

Comment by Carolyn on May 19, 2011 at 1:34pm

As of today my daughter has been at SEPS for 30 days total of 73 days at the Naval station. I am happy for you all that your kids have made it home. It has been and will be a long hall for my daughter, I just wished she could get some good news soon. Thanks for listening to me :)

Well my daughter is still supposedly not fit for travel (my hearts hurts for her). She ia having dark thoughts...not about harming herself, she said she just feels like hitting something. I told her to start writing, drawing etc.Now they are talking about Med board?? Does anyone know anything about this?
Comment by Carolyn on May 17, 2011 at 1:13am
Seriously....how do they get a way with this?
Comment by Carolyn on May 16, 2011 at 9:14pm
My daughter has been there 69 days. She will find out Wednesday if she is fit for travel. She spends her time reading, she is not allowed to walk or do any physical therapy. It scares me to think she might get crippled. She is only 20 years old. I just want her home so we can heal her mind an her body. Ship 5 is not a good place to be. My daughter calls it purgatory, it's worse than jail. In jail you can have visitors with out an act of congress. I pray for all of you a speedy recovery for your Children and home ASAP
