MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

My son did not appeal and came back home.  Ship 5 really does damage to these kids and I don't know how they get away with treating them the way that they do.  My son came home at the end of October and he still thinks about it and is very hurt by the actions taken on Ship 5.

My son is very disappointed about being sent home but couldn't stand the thought of staying any longer to appeal his condition. It really wouldn't matter in his case, he obviously has to have the cataract removed. His concern is re-enlisting in a year and going through the same process all over again and ending up back on ship 5. Is there any way of preventing it from going this far? He told me that he wished he had had a back up plan in mind in case this didn't work out.

The situation with the recruiters gets me angrier and angrier the more I think about it.  It shouldn't be allowed - especially since the Navy is oversubscribed.  My son is a single 19 year old but there are heartbreaking stories on this site about families who have gone to great lengths to make the Navy their future only to be sent home on something that in many cases should have been dealt with at MEPS.

I agree about the doctors at MEPS.  My daughter was sent home due to having surgery too close to going to BC.  The recruiter told us not to worry about it and get a doctor's release and she would be OK.  Right be for she left, the recruiter asked her to cover the scars with make-up.  She did not cover them and the doctor at MEPs saw them but still sent her to BC.  Once at BC, the doctor's saw them and sent her to Ship 5.  She was almost charged with fraudulent enlistment.  She told them that she a the doctor's release (which was not in her official file- but we had a copy- another recruiter problem) and we could send a copy of the text messages with the recruiter.  She has a RE 8 code.

Thank you for this advice. I will definitely take all of the action suggested.  He was asked for his dermatology records during MEPS.  I think it's a scam - or at least a huge waste of the taxpayer's dollars.  Thanks Niko's mom!

My son was sent to Ship 5 today due to scarring on his chest and back from acne as a teen. They presented a few far-fetched scenarios regarding how this could affect him in the Navy. The doctor said he could appeal but it is unlikely he would win that. Does contacting a congressman really help in this type situation? Is there any hope he can realize his dream or is it all for naught? advice welcome. thanks.

My son is waiting to come home. He was discharged for a cataract and scar tissue on his eye. He told me that he is getting a medical discharge with an RE 8 code. They told him that he had to wait a year to re-enlist and that he had to have the cataract removed. My questions is: What are the chances of him actually being able to get a waiver after having this done to get back into the Navy? Or would he have a better chance of joining another branch? I know that the Navy is overmanned right now and could use some advice. If he chooses to re-enlist, would he have to go through this same process just to be put on Ship 5 again and wait to be sent home once again. I would hope they wouldn't let it go that far for a second time.

I just finished reading everything u said Lauren. I know its going to be a LONG wait if he chooses to come back bc I'm sorry bc they lie! so we will see if they actually let him come back.. :( :(
Comment by amandarenee84 on April 18, 2011 at 1:43pm
Thanks Lauren! We are already going to get a second opinion when he comes home. He was told he does have 20/20 vision and it only happens when he's readlly tired. Luckily, he's getting whats called "early seperation" and not actually discharged. So he can hopefully fix the issue and try again in 6 months if he chooses to do so.
