MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

Well i'm not a mom but i a gf with an SR who is getting discharged this week. He learned when he got to BC that he had a vision problem called diplopia (double vision). Until he is able to leave, he spends his days on Ship 05.

Well, my daughter arrived home safe last night by plane!  This group was a lifesaver during her time in Ship 5 as were you all.  Thank you all for the valuable information you were able to provide and support given.  Now I am just breathing a sigh of relief!  Thank you again, and I pray all of our children have great futures ahead for them.

My daughter said they only said plane or train with her.  Everyone that left the day she did was taken to the airport.

Dayle and Angela,

I was also told that my son would be sent home in the most cost efficient manner and that proved to be by plane.  I hope for both of you that is true for your children as well.  My son is doing well.  He is still trying to figure out is path but is happy because he is working.  If his hearing is better, he is still talking about rejoining the Navy and has been told by his recruiter he would be eligible.  Hope all is good for you and your children are home soon.

srm54, Thank you for thinking of us.  You know just what we are going through and this is really making me very anxious.  At this point, I just want her home safe!  THEN I can relax!   Hope your son is doing well! Angela

Hoping for a plane ride home for my daughter too!  Dayle...I will call you later today....I know it's 6:07 AM where you are!  I'm sure you would not appreciate that! LOL  I will talk to you later.  Angela

srm54,

Thank you for the information. I just called and was told he would be sent home by the most cost effective method.  We all know that won't be a plane!  He won't know how he is getting home until Monday afternoon at the earliest.

Angela and Dayle,

My son was sent home in November.  We live in California and he was sent home by airplane.  I have been told (not sure how true it is) that they are flown home as long as there is no enlistment fraud.  Hopefully this is true.  It seems to take a long time to get them home and it took my son about 10-12 days from the point he was sent to Ship 5 to be sent home.  Hope you're kids are home soon.

Comment by Angela on April 7, 2011 at 2:38pm
dayle, that is good news that they are giving 2 days notice.  Did you also hear that they either send them home on a bus or a train and not a plane?  Lindsay got an R8 and was under the impression also that if given an R4 you don't get a plane ride home.  So hopefully she will get a plane ticket!!! How did your son sound when you talked to him?  We are in New York....I see you are in CA.  Well good luck to your son....please keep in touch and keep me updated and I will do the same.  Thank you for all of the information...and if any information I have noted above is wrong, someone please let me know!  Enjoy your day...if you can! Angela

Angela, my son called me this morning and said they posted the names of the people leaving on Monday.  He was not on the list.  He is hoping that they post the names for Tuesday on Friday morning.  It looks like they are giving them a 2 business day notice. He spoke with a Chief who said that the possible Govt. shut down should not affect him if his paperwork is already done.  They will not fly them home if they have been given an R4, only train or bus. You can call transportation and they will help you purchase a plane ticket.  When Lindsay gets home you send the unused bus or train ticket back and they will reimburse you what they paid for the ticket minus a 20% charge. This is what I have been told, if it is incorrect, someone please feel free to give us the correct  information!  By the way, what State are you in?   Dayle
