MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

SA wife...Same thing with my son. My son did not appeal and is being separated. He's been there for 2 weeks and we still don't know when he is coming home. We are hoping it is this week. The next few weeks will be tough for your recruit so I would start now building his self-esteem back up. He needs to know that this does NOT make him a failure, but that this is just not the path God has for him.

I talk to my son everyday and tell him how proud we are of him for giving this a shot and now he can begin making plans on how to redirect his life and start making plans to work towards the next thing on his list of possible career paths. Although it has been hard, talking to him about this when he calls has really lifted his spirits.

Although things did not pan out as planned, he has realized that he has learned a lot about himself and has a deeper appreciation for things he never even thought twice about before he went to bootcamp.

My thoughts and prayers are with you also.

ladies my SR just gave me call not a good one i might add. said they had him in the psych ward. was going to be seen by a psychiatrist. what does this mean? i tried not to cry and held positive. he just kept repeating he needed to come home. he needs prayers, positive thought and just good stuff sent his way. he said he would call again tomorrow. prayers for SR Evans. please ladies keep him and me in your prayers we need them.

do you guys know how this will effect him? will get get to come home? i want him too but at the same time i don't cause I don't want him to regret it later. he said that the physical stuff is not the problem he said he just misses me and everyone back home and that they took his wallet away that had my picture and my note with words of encouragement. i'm so mad that they did that because if they hadn't he would not have fallen into this depression. ugh, i feel so hopeless cause i can't do anything about it. help please!

Search their site for a close branch.  One of the reasons my daughter was going to open a Navy Fed account was that there was one close to home.  I wish that I could help, but she was sent to Ship 5 before they had a chance to open an account.  She called home for her old account information, she had left it open until she finished BC.

I have a question for those who have had kids recently returned home. During processing days they sign up with Navy Fed and their pay is deposited into that account. Well, what happens when they are discharged before they receive their check card or account number? My son called today and the bank told them he would have to go to a branch or to the base to get information. They can't give that info over the phone. Now what, all his pay is in that account? Do you think GL will forward it?
Comment by Tobianne on February 25, 2011 at 5:07pm

Kathy(Joes mom)-

type in the search ship 6 (sick or injured recruits) waiting to return to a division to finish BC

I will send you a friend request and you can also find it on my groups may be easier. No if the Navy did his surgery you do not pay for it. While in GL they take care of them.
Comment by Tobianne on February 25, 2011 at 5:02pm

TammySue is right, I do think however that ship 6 is RCU. When Kay was there it was ship 4 and it went down for renovations.

If he is not being separated then this is where he will be, then yes be placed in a new division with a new PIR date.

You should go to the sick and injured group. That may be a bit more of what you need right now.

Kathy...Just from the information I have read, your son will probably recover on

Ship 5 then be placed with another division to begin his boot camp training. You may not know his PIR date for awhile depending on how quickly he recovers but he will definitely be there longer than the 8-9 weeks. From what I understand, this is not all that uncommon.

Good luck to you and your son :)
