MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

Harkness26...I will absolutely ask him!!
Waynesmom...My son said he goes to legal this coming week so we know it's going to be a couple of weeks before he comes home. I'm sorry for your frustration. I can honestly tell you that being a part of this group and getting information from others going through this process has helped me not feel like an island. At first I was hesitant to post anything thinking that everyone would think I was complaining. But after I did, these other fabulous ladies came to my rescue and helped me realize that the Navy is not as supportive of some like they are others. But that just means it's not the path God has for our wonderful young men and they will become greater men on another path.
My son also said he spends a lot of time reading and that they have a pretty good choice of books to read. My son loves to read. He also said that all the medical guys are grouped together. He has gotten to know a small group of guys and said they have started making a list of things they were going to do when they got home. I asked him what their names were and he said, "Mom, you don't know them." I told him I might not know them but I HAVE been communicating with some moms whose sons are on Ship 5 with him! LOL
The next time I talk to him I'll make sure he gets their names. He is suppose to call me tomorrow.
I'm excited for you GarysMom that you get to pick your son up Tuesday. Good for you and your family! If it's not too much to ask, would you please ask your son if he met my son and if he did, how is he getting along? And then would you send me a message letting me know? I would so much appreciate that!!! His first name is Jonothon, but he goes by Chad.
GarysMom...I am sorry to hear about your son's situation. I hope he is able to have his eyes corrected and try again :) Good luck to you and your son.
Navymom...Thank you for your advice. I am very sorry this process was a nightmare for you also :( He was asked if he wanted to fight being discharged but he told them not at this time. I asked him myself if he wanted to appeal the decision. He said at this point, the meds they gave him (5 in all) made him so sick he couldn't take them and just wants to come home so he can get better.
How soon was your son sent home?
@ Chad's Mom -- My son was also from TX and he flew home. They had also talked about the train but that wasn't an option at the end. He said all of them from TX were given flights. I don't think you need to worry about that.
Have you called the SEPS Administrator. They gave me more help than anyone else. Messages are usually not given to them but they can call every day. It isn't necessarily when they want to but they do get to call. You can email me if need more info. This was a nightmare for me and if I can help you I will. LSte56@aol.com
Okay gals, Mom is a little hot right now!!! I called Ship 5 last night because they list that number above. I requested they give my son a message to call me because I have not been able to talk to him since he arrived at Ship 5. As of about 20 minutes ago I still had not heard from him so I called again. The person in charge said he would give him another message but was very rude about it. Ten minutes later I received a phone call from my son, thank God! The first thing my son told me was to stop calling because he just got griped out because I called. He also said he really didn't care because he was really glad to finally talk to me. I asked him if he got my message from last night and he said no. I told him that the PERSON said he could use his phone card to call me anytime and my son said that I wasn't told the truth and he could not call whenever he wanted. My son was also talking in a very low voice as if he had to be careful of what he said. The only thing I am grateful for right now is that my son said the doctor assigned to him has been very nice and helpful to him. He also thinks he will be able to fly home. I told him he WOULD fly home even if I had to pay for it myself!
Regardless, I was so happy and relieved to finally talk to my son and hear that he is okay and not mentally unstable like they said. He just got very ill and at one point the doctor asked him if he missed his family. Being as he was sick and worn out, he broke down because he really misses us and that's why they are labelling him as mentally unstable to continue.
Harkness26...Thank you!
I read that those on Ship 5 are allowed 2 phone calls a week. However, I called SEPS last night and talked to someone who told me they could make a phone call everyday. He also has phone cards. Can he use those to call me from a payphone?
