I have received information that my son is being medically discharged and is on Ship 5.  He heard that the last recruit discharged and sent home to Texas was sent by train. I have 2 questions:

1st--What train station and train company does the navy use?

2nd--How do I make plane reservations for him instead and get him to the airport?  He 19 and doesn't have a clue as to how to make plane reservations and will be totally lost at O'Hare.

My son and I need help desperately with this situation!!!

This is an ordeal that is many times, most times, uncalled for and wrong on so many levels.  They take strong, healthy boys that have made this huge decision to leave home and become independent and successful but are torn down so far by the time they come home that it is hard for them to face family, friends and former co-workers.  The Navy doesn't seem to realize how life changing this can be.  On Ship 5 they are treated as if they have done something wrong.  They are treated in many ways like they are in prison and in some ways I believe worse.  I am not happy with the outcome of all of this and feel that I sent them a very strong person and they sent him back broken.  Now we have to start over and put the pieces back together and hope that he can move forward at some point.  It is so easy for them to cast them aside and I think it is wrong.  My son did nothing wrong and yet he came back feeling less than what he is.  This process is wrong.  I believe that they have so many people enlisting that they have no problem finding fault in their contracts due to poor recruiting and just sending them back.  They have plenty to choose from and they don't care about feelings or a person's life after this.  Someone needs to re-asses what they are doing to these young boys and their families and find a better way.  Recruiters should be punished when they lie to our children just to get a bonus on their pay.  They should have to give back those bonuses if they have done something wrong.  If they were held accountable I do not believe that we would continue having these problems to this magnitude.  People act like this doesn't happen very often.  They don't realize that they are sending people home almost every day.  They are sending home 20 recruits a week many weeks.  This is just not normal.

My daughter's time at ship 5 was in August of 2010.  Time has helped heal her pain, but the experience with the recruiter has left a bad taste for the military with all of us.  She has to write a narrative report for her college English class and chose to write about her short time in the Navy.  The professor wanted them to write about something personal and interesting.

It has been devastating for the whole family! This was a huge event for us. Every holiday or gathering was made special because it would be the last for awhile with him. We use vacation time from work as boot camp approached to spend as much time together as we could. He quit his job and canceled all his memberships and the list goes on. You all know what it's like to prepare not to mention the added stress! I think this experience will leave a lasting negative impression with my son. He did everything he was told to. He trusted his recruiter and believe the recruiter was helping him achieve his goal. I'm still amazed that when confronted he would blatantly lie to me. My son will be fine and as soon as we can get him home he will begin to focus on school. We still don't understand why it has to talk so long. To me it almost sounds like punishment to keep them confined when they have no use for them. Sorry, I guess I'm just one very frustrated mother...

We found out the hard way that recruiters will say or do anything to get them in and then they are done with it.  Then when something comes up in boot camp the boys are devastated.  My son is now looking for a job and has to state on the applications that he was separated from the Navy because of a Defective Enlistment Agreement.  Employers don't understand this and think they are hiding something.  It has made finding a job harder than ever.  My son feels very betrayed at this point.  He has been home since the end of October and is still looking for a job.

I believe he is on Ship 5...he has told us that he goes to his barrack at night, then reports back "here" during the day.  If his division is in PT or the "other cool stuff" he is assigned cleaning, if his division is at school, he joins the schooling.  He calls us each Wednesday to update us...he stated last week that the blood work would be back tomorrow 1/19/11 so we are trying to be patient and wait for the call.  If he is seperated, there will not be an appeal.  However he was only in week 3 so will he be sent back to CA on a bus? If so, we would want to change that and fly him.  We know that would be our own personal expense which is fine with us.
