MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

I hope your boys get to feeling better soon.

My son has to interviews also. He was very lucky to have some good work skills from before he went to the Navy. He left a job as an apprentice making 22.00 an hour. That was a stupid mistakes that he now regrets I think. He does have a very good chance at a job making 18.00 with a temp company and will most likely be hired on and this could be the same rate of pay for him as the job he left. The other job is a bit further away and stars at 19.50. I know he misses his division. He is just looking to get things back on track.
He was not able to go back to work when he got home, the company his dad worked for needed someone so they had to hire another boy. He is not upset though as this was only a 14.00 job and would only has lasted until mid January.

He does not think he will try to go back into the Navy. He wants to go on and possibly do some underwater welding and this is some schooling that he will have to save for.

Good luck to all of your sons and daughters. God has another plan for these young people.

Dalton has been home for almost 2 weeks now as well! He has had 2 job interviews. The first was at Sears. They were ready to hire (as my husband knew them!). Something was wrong with his app and they couldn't even pull it. It was a big slap in the face for him...again! Well, then he had an interview with Wal Mart and they sent him to a closer Wal Mart. He goes there tomorrow! He is so excited. It is part time. Hopefully it will turn full time. We are working on taking the SAT's and getting into college. He is wanting to go to law school. Hopefully things will look up for ALL of these guys!!!!!!!!!

My son came home on the 27th. He paces the floor like he never did before. He is nervous and just doesn't feel "right". He also came home with a cough, congestion, the whole thing that he caught while in seps. It is getting better. He is looking for a job. I don't know how much more rejection he can take after all of that so I hope he finds something soon. It was an awful experience all the way around.

traceyl3kids ~ I am sorry to hear he is not doing any better. By the time my son came home he was just about 85%. He is doing better now - although he has been home about 3 weeks or so. He said it was extremely hard for him there because his group graduated right before he came home. He said it was sad to see some of the guys because he felt he should have been there too. I know it is hard to watch them go through this. My son has already enrolled in EMT school and should be done in March. He has 6 months to decide if he is going back. I would like to see him try to do some branch of service - but if it is not meant to be then it isn't. I think the longer he waits the easier it will be for him to say he is not doing it. The sad thing is he was only 6 days away from graduation when he got really sick so he knows he can do it! Half of boot camp he was miserable with the fever/cold/flu and it finally just over his body. My thoughts and prayers are with you and him!

srm- good I know it is heartbreaking and that is not just for the kids but for us moms also. We watched that excitement build and also listened as it all crumbled down. He will find a way. God will provide.

Have him tell you stories, my boy loves this.
I tell my daughter I can not wait for Christmas so she can come home and sing the cadences with him. Maybe he will be a bit more on key then!! lol

Good luck to your son and to you also.

Well, my son is home and it is good to see him. He has a good attitude - figures God has another plan for him. He really wishes it had worked out though. He would have been a good sailor.

BANavyMom - I don't think they will let them re-enlist with Asthma, even with a waiver. If he wants to stay, he'll have to push to do so. He'll have to ask for a second medical opinion but the Navy is required to do so if he asks. He can also appeal....but be forwarned it could take MONTHS and he will stay in the medical ship till the appeal is finalized. Most kids HATE the boredom and just want to come home....so he'll really have to want to stay and TELL EVERYONE he comes into contact with that message....he'll have to push really hard and it won't be an easy road. In the end, they might send him home anyway. My daughter is coming home today, and as much as she wanted to stay just sort of lost the will to fight for it because she was so devastated at being told that she was being sent home. Good luck to your son!

Tobianne ~ glad your son is doing well. We were able to get my son back on our insurance due to that new Obama law. Just thought I would throw that out there to you. I know everyonne's situation is different.

navymom ~ I understand the feeling of "just being dismissed" as that is how I felt with my son. I felt that when he enlisted he knew full well that some day he may have had to "put his life on the line for his country" yet that was not how he was treated when something came up as far as his health. He never lied about anything yet he was made to feel like he did.
Comment by navymom on October 31, 2010 at 11:36pm
My son came home last Wed. after spending a month in Ship #5. It was a nightmare from start to finish. He is looking for a job and wanting to just put it all behind him. I hate the way they just dismiss them and treat them when they have done nothing wrong.
