I think it does make a BIG difference if they had gone through any part of boot camp. My son was only 6 days away from graduation when he got very sick so he kind of said the same thing about this area - well once he was feeling better - for a while he didn't seem to mind as he was trying to get better. But I agree, I think if they hadn't gone through any part of it - they don't know the rules. My son is not upset at the Navy persay, he is more upset with his recruiter as far as the recruiter telling him not to say anything about certain things. In the long run I know things will work out for my son, it just hurts that he has to go through this now. He is home and was on Ship 5 for about 11 days. I will pray for those still on Ship 5 and a quick return home for them!

I know my son said the same thing. He has been there since last Wednesday, upset he just got to legal today as others that came after went Monday and Tuesday. He hates it there and said that no one understands what it is like until they spend a day there. He says they have to deal with a lot and it is horrible. Many never went through BC, so they do not really know the rules. They talk so much crap about the Navy and it makes him mad. He is not mad at the Navy for this, something happened during his Meps to read one way and now something else. It is not the Navy and he will not bash so he wants all to keep the crap talk quiet.

Has any of your kids started college or thought about college when they got/get home? D wants to start college. From my understanding when he left for boot..he was on his own. Therefore his own household. He SHOULD be able to get a pell grant as my income will not be factored in. I cannot afford his college as I have 4 children and MANY bills! UGH! SO, has anyone else thought of this?

My son came home Sept 17 after being in Ship 5 for nearly 2 weeks. He made several friends, and yet he was mostly just bored. He likes to keep busy. He's eligible to re-enlist, but will be taking a few months to study, make some money at a seasonal job and start all over. At least those are his plans for now. The "unknown" is definitely the hardest part for us at home and I think even for them up there. This is all so new to them being on their own, at least for alot of them. He also had computer privileges up there, and since he's been home he's posted on facebook to his PIR 10/29 group and wishes them well. As far as traveling home, we live only 200 miles south of GL and they still flew him home. We first thought he'd be on a train, but he was on a flight all of 20 minutes or so. Big hugs and tears all around......until next time!

The second week that my daughter was at Ship 5 was much better than the first. She was given a job as a MA over a group. She was able to call home daily and even get some computer time. We did not know this until she returned home - she complained the entire time she was there.

I know this is a very upsetting and frustrating process for you. I just went through the exact same thing. It is the "unknown" that is the problem. Unfortunately even though they are coming home they are still under the "Navy's" watch so they have to follow their rules. Trust me - I didn't have any patience the entire time my son was on Ship 5 so I know how you feel.

Yes, they are transported there in groups all at the same time. For instance, my son was transported to the airport with a bunch of people at a 11:00 a.m. and his flight did not leave until almost 4:00 p.m. He said it was fine with him as once they were taken to the airport he was on his own. He was able to use the payphones to call us and let us know he was there and he was able to buy himself a magazine and stuff like that.

dalton'smom - yes they still get a paycheck while there. My son had come home with a piece of paper that broke down his pay. He was paid through the day he left. He was on Ship five for 11 days. My son found out a few days prior to leaving when he was leaving as it was over the last little Monday holiday we had.

Thursday will be a week that he has been at ship 5. What a nightmare! I could have thought of several reasons for him to come home and an old fracture was not even on the list! Anyway, are they still getting a paycheck while they are there?

my duaghter flew home, she chose a major airport further from home to make sure that she did not have come home by bus. she had many stories to tell and we enjoyed the extra time with her.
