Space A Travel Eligibility
Ok, this is a very important link and I hope it stays valid if I forget to update it. Just so everybody knows, legal dependents are now allowed to travel Space A while their military sponsor is on deployment orders. If you don't know what this is it is very simple. You can fly at little cost almost anywhere in the world on a government aircraft. You sign up on a list and wait for your number to be called. So, if your sailor is deployed to say, Japan, you can jump on a Space A flight to Japan for say 30 dollars. I don't know the exact amount, but it is cheap. Take a look at this, Google Space A travel, you will get all the answers you need. If you have more questions, ask.

My husband just got to P-Cola last night.  I am wanting to move down there with him asap.  I know that brown bag is hard to get approved but I think I am just going to do what you did CCITY.  My husband is in the AIRR program and the training is long enough as it is so I am going to move down on my own.  Need to start looking at apartments not sure about how all this works, lol.

Usually they can count out their duty scedule because it's every certain amount of weeks. My husband does it every three weekends but I think everyone else does it every 4 weeks. But I do think it is every week that they know for sure which day. Have u looked at staying on the base? On NAS which isn't far from Corry Station they have a place for families to stay which is pretty cheap. There for you can take a taxi to and from each base. I live in Pensacola so I haven't had to travel here but that sounds like a fair ticket to and from where you live. When I lived in California it would have cost me $600 for a round trip to come here. Renting a car would be cheaper than taking taxi's everywhere. Taxi's here are kind of expensive. I think you can get a car for $20 a day. Rather than payign a taxi $20 everywhere you go. I would call a call rental place here and find out.

Also, do yall usually/do you plan on renting a car? He and I are just under 25, so we would have to pay a higher fee for that. I really don't want to rent one. Since I will probably fly into P'cola, I can take a shuttle or taxi to him. What do yall think?

What airline do yall use to visit? Southwest doesn't fly into P'cola. I've been looking at US Airways. From Charlotte, NC to P'cola it's 268 round trip and they have a 25 charge for 1 bag. Does this sound like a "good" deal? He should be in phase 3 definitely by June 24. I'm going to fly down the Friday after because they are off that Monday for July 4th and fly back to NC the following Tuesday. I asked about duty and he said when he finds out his duty schedule he will switch if he does have that weekend. Reminds me, how far in advance do they find out their schedule? Weekly?

Comment by annamichael on May 8, 2011 at 9:32am
Yes, I've asked. He doesn't know yet because he hasn't started. He will start Tuesday and ask around to other guys who have had that night schedule. Since they will for sure have the 4th of July off (which is a Monday)... I'm wondering if they will extend weekend liberty to Monday at 10, rather than Sunday at 10?

My husband got told that they have a three day weekend on memorial day. I don't know what day that it is but they get that off. I know it is somewhere at the end of the month or beginning of next month. I'm not sure wither or not he will get to leave early on friday or not. My husband schooling is monday-friday and he still does school on Friday's but he does morning school. Have you asked him yet?  That's a good question. My husband won't reach phase three until the 27th. so I'm not sure.

A couple of questions:

My boyfriend has been in P'cola since April 23 and found out last week he will start school (IT ATF - Corry Station) Tuesday. He was told he has the "night" classes - 3-11. Is this Monday-Friday or on Fridays do they let them leave earlier if they are in phase three?

Also, he just told me he heard that on Monday July 4th, that would be a three day weekend. Is this true?? Because his phase 3 should start June 24th-ish, and I was going to go then, but if he has a three day weekend, I would rather go the following week. Thanks!

It took maybe a month or so for her to get it.

I know they don't like giving it to people and I know people get it and its hard I just hope that it doesn't take forever and a half. I'm already living where my husband is at even though they said not to. They can't control where I live. If his request gets denied he's just going to keep on submitting it until it gets approved. Was your wife still in training when she got her brown baggers?
Comment by Gman Navy Husband on May 4, 2011 at 4:31pm

CCIty,

That is a lie.  The deal is, they don't like giving it to people.  My wife got it and we don't have any kids at all!  My neighbor down there got it but it was a pain the butt.  Her husband was hassled and threatened with Captains Mast.  End the end he was given brown bagger.  The deal is this, the Navy cannot tell you as a spouse where you can and cannot live.  If you decide to move to where your sailor is in school, then so be it.  They do not have to give brown bagger to your sailor, but there really is no reason why they shouldn't.  It is for the betterment of the sailor to be with their family.

Don't listen to anybody that says no.  If his packet is denied, then it is no, unless he wants to resubmit it.  My wife knew a lot of sailors both male and female that were brown bagger, they even have their own separate rooms so they can cram more folks in them.  Brown baggers only sleep in the barracks when they have overnight duty.  My wife had like 5 or 6 roommates.

Don't worry about what others say, and tell your husband the bantering and crap from his chain of command is just that, words.  He won't get in trouble.  He won't go to Captains Mast.  They are just being a-holes because they can.

My husband talked to someone yesterday about brown baggers and they said it usually gets denied and it's even hard for people with children. They said it's mainly for people whose spouse can't take care of their child alone due to disabilities or the child needing special care. He's still going to try because we do have a song so hopefully he will get it. I didn't know about all of this until I got here. There's so much to learn. My husband has a lot of training so I hope he gets approved.
