Your clarity of explanation helps us very much, abuon18, and also thank you for your acknowledgement of how we all miss our loved ones :).  I hope you have a beautiful Sunday and I maybe sending more questions as time goes on.

Thank you Jeanette! It's not easy to be a loved one of ANYONE in the military, we all worry the same! I'm glad I can help, I know there are a lot of missing pieces when you don't get to talk to your sons/daughters all the time, so I am happy to share what I've learned by living with it :)

Yes her time right now is fulfilling her commitment. Eventually, down the road when she decided to re-enlist or not, if she DOES decide to re-enlist she will have to spend an extra year on a ship before switching to shore duty but if she does not decide to re-enlist it will not extend her current commitment.

Hi abuon18! Your feedback is great! To extend my question to our particular situation, our daughter arrived in San Diego October 19 and the start of training A has been delayed until ???. So is her time right now part of fulfilling her commitment? BTW, I admire you so much being a Navy wife!  My husband travels in his job, but I know that is nothing compared to having a spouse deployed!

Hi Jeanette!

The time they are on hold is part of their commitment (if there is a special case, like they get put on medical hold or something they may extend because they are required to serve at sea a certain length of time, for example if my husband decides to re-enlist he will have to spend another year at sea to fulfill his commitment before getting his shore duty rotation). Especially for the STG rate, which is more sea-based than some other rates. There are not many options for them on shore duty so they have to spend more time at sea than other rates. BUT just because they are on a sea rotation does not mean they will always be deployed. When my husband comes back from this deployment, he will still be considered "sea duty" even though his ship will be in port. And that time in port DOES count towards his original commitment.

Hi abuon18, thanks for the timeline info. I have a question which may be silly but I just don't know so am asking: Is the time they are on hold considered part of the 4 or 6 year commitment or does only the time count when they are actually in school or deployed?

Comment by abuon18 on November 2, 2013 at 3:25pm

Hey all,

There are ALWAYS holds between every school and usually once they finish school and go to their ship. Obviously it is different for each Sailor, even if they are in the same classes. My husband is a 6 year STG so he had C school after A school. Here was his timeline: He finished A school in Feb. 2012. Was on hold for C school until May 2012. In that time they send them to different "working parties" - my husband was on a crew that went to the BUDS complex on Coronado (where they train the SEALS) and did a lot of maintenance and cleaning over there. He also did a stint as the duty driver -  driving people between bases, to medical, to the airport, etc. When they're on holds they have the opportunity to go TAD - temporary assigned duty - they have to sign up for these and I highly encourage it because they are FUN and they're a great learning experience (PLUS they make some extra money!). Out here in San Diego they have some great ones, like they can go to San Clemente island for a week or so and train with the BUDS. Then once they class up for C school, which is actually about 2 or 3 different smaller length schools, they'll complete those, and there will be various hold times. And your Sailor will be in C school with some of the same people he was in A school with but different people also. Depending on what system they choose to train him/her on. My husband graduated C school in April 2013 and then was on hold until July 2013 when he got his orders to his first ship, and deployed in August.

Hi Ladies! Our Sailor finished A school in July and expects to start OPS, or C school in February. Until then, they are kept very busy cleaning, painting and detailing all around the area. A lot they can't talk about for sure. The 4 yr Sailors will go out to the fleet after A school; but it looks like there are holds for that. I'm sure things change and the fiscal atmosphere probably affects operations.

It can be very difficult to figure out exactly when and where of everything.  Our son is in San Diego, and hope to come home for Christmas.  After he should ship out, but nothing is ever definite, and I think he wants to make sure he doesn't talk about anything confidential.  We also have a lot of quick texts.
