It looks like the program is going through some changes, that MaryK's son will be in the vanguard for. This is brand new; that DEPpers are not able to get subs guaranteed for SECF. Here's what I'm thinking will happen... I think that they are preparing to bring enlisted women into the submarine force. Those signing up for DEP now will be hitting the boats in about two years. This is about the time they will be ready to bring women junior enlisted on board. By then, they should have had a couple female junior officers on board for about a year, and they should have a female chief on board. I think they stopped guaranteeing subs because they want to see how they're doing bringing women into the submarine force in about a year, when those signing up for DEP now are getting to boot camp. They need to get a feel for how many spots they'll have available for females, so they're hedging their bets, not promising subs. I suspect they'll sort out in boot camp who'll go subs and who'll go surface. From boot camp the surface folks will head to San Diego, and the sub designates to Groton. It'll be interesting to see how this transition is handled.

Susan,Our sons graduated together last Thurs. but my son is going to Bremerton. I'm glad they had the chance to spend their last Sat. visiting New York City together. They said they had a great time there. Did you make it to the grad?

Hi Susan, I don't know if he was aboard the Springfield. Thanks for the info. I'm hoping to see Ben this week while I'm in Mystic, CT for a conference. If I see Kyle and recognize him I'll give him a hug from you.:) Martha

Hi Martha,
According to the Sub School website (linked below), it's an eighteen week school. Good luck to Ben, my son is about two months behind him in the pipeline.

Hi Sue,
My son is now in ATT, after completing BESS a month ago, and will be a sonar tech eventually. The length of submarine deployments depends on the type of boat. The SSBNs (or "boomers") do only go out for roughly seventy days at a time, but will do that two or three times a year. The SSNs ("fast attacks") will deploy for up to six months at a time every year and a half to two years, unless they go into the shipyard for an overhaul.

Thank-you both. I'm sure I will learn a lot about STS as time goes on. I'm glad to have found this group. I'm hope you each will have some time with your sailor over the holidays.

My son called the other day to tell us he will be a sonar Tech. Being 6'7" he was told it will be alright because he will be sitting most of the time.LOL. I've never been to Groton but we hope to go in the spring.
