Yep - skimmers will also sometimes call the targets they cruise in "boats" also, but it's definitely more common in the submarine community. You'll hardly ever hear a bubblehead talk about their "ship". Is that enough jargon for you, yet? ;)

Mark, that makes sense. Also, there have been some issues with the new Virginia class subs. So, I'm hoping this won't last too much longer.

Hmm. I wonder if it's a spillover from the Hartford collision in the Strait of Hormuz last spring. It could be that a number of other boats each had to extend their deployments by a month or two to cover for the absence of the Hartford (especially since they're both out of Groton) while they repaired the damage from the collision. Carriers were routinely being extended several years ago at the height of the Iraq war, but (at least the ones based in Puget Sound) have stayed within the six months the last few years.

He's on the USS Miami. They left the first few days of March and they have been extended twice. First to 7 months now to 8 months. We have no idea what's up, but I'd never heard of a fast attack going over 6 months either, but then I'd never heard of a carrier task force going 8 months until now.

Wow Lyn - that's unusual, extending a sub deployment past six months - which boat is he on?

My son is also on his first deployment. He's been gone 7 months now and won't be back for a while yet. I agree the first couple of months were tough, but not nearly as tough as finding out they had been extended out to 8 months. I've heard from him 3 times in 7 months, so hang in there Suzanne. I also hope that sailor will be OK.

Yes on Facebook on the COMSUBPAC group they posted the video amazing how they got him off the sub. Great job for the Coast Guard. The source of the video is from ( www.komonews.com ).

Marriages by proxy are were handled by the Navy. Check with the chaplan's office at your son's base and see if they still allow them and how it could be done.Next talk to whoever was going to do the wedding at your end. Then find someone (like the best man) to stand in for the groom. I know the Army's been doing them for guys sent to the sand. I think all the paperwork needs to have been done, marriage license and permission from the Navy, etc. Wow, its been a lot of years since anyone I know has done this and he was on a surface ship.

I wish I could tell you there was something you could do to get him home, but well... once a sub goes out, there just isn't anything anyone can do. Once they are under the ocean the only time you can get off is if there is a serious medical problem they can't handle on board. There is always the idea of going ahead with the wedding via a marriage by proxy. Not much fun without the groom, but it is done from time to time.

At one time my son was sleeping between two torpedoes racks. He said he liked it because there was plenty of head room.
