Hey, ObiWan!
(That's what I call Mark, for you newbies) Long time, no see-post! I left a post over at the "B/B/K" group saying that we'll probably be in town for a real long Labor Day holiday. Husband wants to know if you're up for golf?! Hugs, k.

This is only an educated guess Ginger - but I would think that STs will be released earlier than most on the boat. My guess is that once the sonar gear that would be considered highly sensitive is removed from the boat, the STs will be turned loose - and they should be able to start working on that before the boat goes into drydock. Anna, I don't think Matt's status as a diver will make any difference. Any diving activities with the boat (they'd be minimal, if any) would be handled by shipyard divers. To my knowledge, subs have divers on board mainly to do security swims (I'll let Matt explain that) prior to getting underway, and once the LA arrives in the shipyard, it won't be going anywhere, except into drydock, which I suppose might call for a swim then. Hopefully, that's good news.

Hi Anna,
I work next to the drydock where the decommissioning and recycling will take place, in fact. That's at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton. I haven't looked at the drydock schedule recently, but I know the push is on to finish the recycling of the Ex-USS Triton that's currently on-going in the drydock. The boat will arrive in the yard a few months prior to it's drydocking, where it will be pierside while preparations are mad to put it in dock. The crew gets released in stages, as the gear their divisions are responsible for is readied for decommissioning. As an A-ganger, I would think that a few may be released earlier than others, but then again, it's a small division, and they may wait until all their equipment is ready for scrap. They will probably be working on draining all the tanks under their cognizance, and there are a lot of them; the most involved will be the fuel oil tanks and hydraulics systems. There will be a decommissioning ceremony early in the process before any large numbers of the crew are released. After that, it will still happen in stages. The last of the crew to leave will be the nukes, many of whom will have to stay until after the shipyard finishes reactor defueling to support final draining of all the plant fluid systems. The A-gangers should all be released by around late summer, would be my guess. Bremerton is about an hour and a half drive from Woodinville, whether you take the Seattle-Bremerton ferry, or drive around through Tacoma.

Lyn,
There are specific dates when dress uniforms are changed from blues to whites, that vary depending on geographic location. That said, I would be stunned if anyone would take issue with which uniform a sailor wore to a family funeral. I would say shame on anyone who had a problem with it.

It depends on the base Nancy - at Bangor and Kings Bay the pier (where boats dock) is not accessible to families. At all the other sub bases, families can be on the pier when the boat comes in - arrangements may need to be made through the ombudsman, though.

How do I find out who our ombudsman will be when our son gets to Pearl Harbor. He reports there no later than August 24th. Also will he live in the barracks. Any info will be helpful.

Mark, I had a question from some one on another group about what sailors wear to funerals. They asked if they were suppose to wear dress blues or if they wore dress whites. I'm not sure I answered her correctly. My son wore his dress whites to my Mom's funeral because we asked him to wear that uniform. It was my Mom's favorite. But I'm not sure what the proper uniform is or what the rules, if any, are for a summer funeral.

Merch, You are so right about the package thing. I sent him a care package last October for Halloween. It arrived at the boat in Feb. and the boat had been in port in Groton for about 80% of that time. I now just send him e-mails and deliver the packages myself when I see him. I must say that others I have spoken to have had better luck with Fast Attacks. Just another one of the joys of the Navy life.

Hi all,

It's been a while since I gave you an update on our weekend activities. So here is last weekend. We adopt all of the servicemen and women who come to our home as our own "sons" and "daughters" so naturally, when they get married and have children they become our adopted grandchildren. This is the latest - a granddaughter! :)

Saturday Evening (July 18, 2009)

We had Randy (Marine Cpl) and Nikki and little Sarah here visiting us for the weekend from Camp Lejeune North Carolina. It was fun making and eating home made pizzas and playing catch phrase with them and Savannah and Brandon (Oceana), and Trever (USS Gunston Hall). We all shared prayer requests and prayed together. Check out the new pics.

Sunday (July 19, 2009)

Had a great day today! Sunday school was good, the lesson was about about faith. Worship was excellent. Pastor Rodney preached about Satan wanting to sift us as wheat - don't let him! Then Savannah and Brandon (Oceana), Brian and Sarah (my daughter and son-in-law), and Randy (Marine – Camp Lejeune, NC) and Nikki and Sarah Mayzak enjoyed a pot roast, potatoes and carrots, followed with apple crisp and ice cream for dinner at our house. We watched two chapters of the book of Matthew on video. Then prayed for Randy and Nikki before they left for home.

All in all, a very good weekend! Thank you Lord!

Blessings on all of you,

John

I'm not sure but when I spoke to Alex, he said we could be there to see Miami return to Groton. We are planning on making arrangements as soon as we get a date of return. If you find out anything let me know. Hope to see you there!
