Oh, my son is hoping to be sent here, but that's a way off. He knows that ST is a pretty boring rate on a boomer though, and wants one of the two SSGNs stationed here. His second choice would be fast attack (SSN), and there are only two here, stationed at the shipyard in Bremerton, which he isn't too keen on (Bangor is much nicer), or the Jimmy Carter (ugh...sorry), which is a "spook" boat at Bangor, but very hard to get. So, his likely west coast bet, if he can't get one of the five SD boats, would be Pearl.

ST (sonar tech), ET (electronics tech) and FT are sister (brother?) rates on submarines.. Together, they comprise the Submarine Electronics and Computer Field (SECF). Their early training is together, until they branch into their specialties which have roughly the same length of training. On the boat they work closely together, especially the FTs and STs, and are the core enlisted rates in the tactical (i.e. target identification, tracking and targeting) team.

Hi Kaye - yes, he called me about an hour ago, and we're all set up. If you're watching any of the Masters, I hope you saw Fuzzy Zoeller come up the eighteenth fairway with his (16 yo?) daughter Gretchen on the bag. She was beaming, and having no problem hauling that big ol' tour bag around that extremely hilly golf course. Eyes were a little damp here, and I'm sure all around eighteen green. I love those kind of moments at the Masters...

Ah-ha - an FT, he must be a pretty sharp kid, then. My son is in Groton now for ST, he's close to finishing ATT now. Yep, there is very little patience for being late for morning muster, especially if you're living in the barracks and can't blame traffic (prolly not much sympathy then, either). Fourteen months in Groton?...wow, were the holds between training phases that long, or did he have another school after his FT "A" school.

Aha, Terrie! I see you found Obi Wan before I got back to you... there's only one COB (Chief of Boat), but as Mark says, there are many other chiefs (at least one per division). Remember that "Chief" means Chief Petty Officer. It's not used as in civilian life, where "Fire Chief" means "top boss."

Mark, has my kid called you yet? He thought he'd take you up on the invitation to the Silverdale meet 'n greet. AND, if you happen to have a TV tuned to the Masters'... Hugs, k.

ugh...that's no fun, but it'll get better. E-3 is pretty junior on boats, so he'll be glad to get that PO third class crow when it comes. Has he been to an "A" school, or is he striking for one of the rates like MM, SK, CS etc...?
Comment by Mark on April 10, 2009 at 5:10pm
Yep, Kaye's great; it varies, but usually there are about a dozen goats per boat, give or take a couple. What's Chance's rate?
Comment by Mark on April 10, 2009 at 4:52pm
Oh - in that case, I'll be sure to pass that on to Kaye's son, Drew... :))

Hi Terrie,
Fedex will only deliver to the addressee. The message means that he has to pick it up at the Fedex office across the highway from the Bremerton airport. I think they're open until six PM for that.

OK, Lyn - you're excused... lol ;)
