This all takes me back too . ... My son also doesn't make a big deal out of things , didn't even want me to bother going when done W/A School. BUT when he got his fish .....that meant he could stay on the boat and THAT was a big deal ..he has reinlisted and I believe when this is all over he will build a home under ground..........lol.....as far as sharing the rest, so many questions that I have asked he can't answer, but this is good because instead of talking shop, we have grown or friendship. I guess it depends on the boat, but my son has been back twice a year for the last 4 years. ( he is on a fast attack )... We just have to remind our men that everyone is important on a sub, there is not extra room for extra people.
huggs my friends

Being on a fast attack will be nice for him after the relative boredom of the shipyard. I was wondering if he was here at PSNS in Bremerton - looks like he's in Norfolk. That's a very cool area, I hope he likes it there.

LOL - that takes me back Pat. I'm afraid he'll feel like a "glorified janitor" quite frequently until he makes Chief. That's just part of being an enlisted sailor, nuc or not, underway or in port. As far as becoming rusty, he'll be back up to speed quickly - half the stuff in power school is stuff he'll never use again, and the main point of prototype is demonstrating that he can apply what he's learned, and has learned how to qualify on the plant. He may not mention it much, but he is still using his nuc training much of the time, also. The frustration with cleaning and doing grunt work is part of being enlisted in the Navy, I'm afraid. What boat is he on, if you don't mind?

No need to sweat that, Pat. The one year thing isn't a hard and fast requirement, especially with extenuating circumstances like your son's. Being a nuc, there is plenty for him to do during a shipyard overhaul, and the Navy probably needs him right where he is. There's generally a lot less for the non-nucs ("coners") to do in the shipyard, except for maybe the "A"-gang MMs, so they're more likely to be assigned as riders on other boats.

How much do you know about that "Dolphin" pin? I saw where someone called it "the pin they get for being on a submarine." I knew there was more to it, but didn't know exactly what... so, I went a-researchin'!

Here's a link to a Wikipedia article on the Submarine Warfare Insignia, which is its official name. I was stunned at the amount of knowledge it takes to earn one. And son told me that if they don't earn it within one year of being assigned to a sub, then they are moved to a ship. These are the reasons why this pin is such a big deal. So, Amber and the other moms with 'pinned' submariners, a truly sincere congratulations from me!

Son says he's about done with his quals, so maybe there's a pin in our not-to-distant future?! Hugs, k.

Hi Jenny, I know you're looking for more current info, but in the meantime, I can give you my impressions from the three weeks I spent there on a sub in the late 80s. I liked it there - I had the impression that it was a lot like Oahu (Hawaii) was 40 years or so earlier before being so overrun with tourists. It had a small town feel to it, with (I think) more reasonable housing costs too. It's a gorgeous place, like Hawaii, but even more remote. A lot of the guys stationed there get into diving, because the conditions are so incredible. Visibility underwater is awesome - it seems like you can see forever, and there are a lot of WWII relics to dive on around the island, including a number of warplanes and smaller ships. When a sailor has leave, there are reasonable flights to Australia and Japan (it's a very popular destination for Japanese tourists).

Hey Kathy and Kay - do a 'mom resume' of your daughter's gifts talents and all that stuff (the funny stuff) - - like leaving the make up all over the bathroom counter so that you can't even find the sink - - ya know? and save it for a few years. You will both love it! It will bring moments back that are priceless!

I don't think that ebay thing's gonna work for you, Kathy. You won't be able to list her for enough to cover the shipping. I'd put her in a box and sit in front of Wal-Mart with a sign, "Free to a Good Home." (Since it's Friday, I don't even know if mine is alive or dead in the basement; watching her TiVo episodes of CSI and ER) Ahhh, peace and quiet...
