It's true that just about every nub on a sub cranks, but there are a few exceptions.  On most boats, if you report aboard as a second class (E5), you usually won't have to crank, but this only happens with a handful of nucs.  It's not a bad experience though in a lot of ways.  It can especially be useful for what amounts to be social networking at a time when it's most valuable, working on sub quals to earn the dolphins.  The keys to qualifying quickly are two things - learning some social skills to schmooze the qualified guys who will sign your card, and learning to prepare for the oral checkouts efficiently.  By this I mean, not trying to achieve perfect, 100% knowledge, but learning at least the standard of 80% or so.  Trying to get that extra 20% is not a good use of their time, and it's an important lesson to learn.  That said, when it comes to actual job performance, in terms of professional responsibilities, "error-free" is the standard.  Where qualifications are concerned, the experienced guys are happy to help in guiding the nubs thru the remaining 20%, but they want to see the nubs get most of the way there by their own effort.

Galley duty is called "crank"!

I was going to comment for philly-momacita.

I think all sailors have to do a short  duty in the Galley, It has a name can't remember what that is called. Mine did it on a shorter underway. He actually had fun.

Jr. Sailor of the Quarter is a very great honor to receive.  It is an award given to the top sailor of each division each quarter.  That sailor has done the best at his/her job over all others in their division or rate.  My sailor received for the 1st quarter of this year (I think).  It really looks good in their file.

Some rates do their A schools else where (CS for instance)  then come to Groton for BESS then straight to their boats.  My only other experience with MM's is the NukeDrops who were my son's buddies who came with him from Goose Creek.  He did BESS then  went to TM school for MMWep.  His A-Ganger buds did something different. It would be so helpful for recruiters to have accurate info! Hope yours enjoys Groton.  Mine's boat is stationed there, so he has been in CT for 3 years now.  Beautiful falls. :-)

Luvmy3brats. My son is MMWep he went straight to Groton after bootcamp. Did all of his training in Groton before being sent to his PDS. He spent about 6 months in Conn.

luvmy3brats - a lot of skimmer recruiters (skimmers are surface sailors - they "skim" the water) have been putting that nonsense out for years.  It makes we wonder if they do it on purpose sometimes, but it's probably just ignorance.  Anyway, you can trust me - the recruiters are dead wrong and your son is correct.

Our son is in radio communication on a sub.  He went from BC in GL to CT for his A school and sub training.

Comment by luvmy3brats on September 17, 2015 at 9:12pm

Hi, question please, my son is currently in BC and will be MM on a sub. His recruiter and another recruiter of another BC mom that I've become friends with whose son is the same rate told us that he would do his A school in GL and then sub school in CT. Then my sailor son said he heard that he will do ALL his training in CT. Does anyone know this for sure, as we are planning our weekends and not sure what to plan for. Two recruiters said GL for A school. Anyone??? TIA!!
