For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The way to say is look at the airfare for a few days plus or minus. We arrived on a Friday and flew home on a Thursday. They do package deals with car and hotel but we were fortunate to stay at his house in Hawaii. You really need a car to get around. There is a great deal to see in Hawaii that is free or very low cost. Famous Waikiki beach you pay to park on the street. On the north coast Turtle Beach is free and you see the sea turtles Climbing Diamond Head is free. It is a few dollars for parking. Pali Lookout one of the most beautiful and historic scenic spots, is free and if I recall the parking was also free. Your son can also book tickets for the attractions at the MWR on the base at greatly reduced prices. You can book the Pearl Harbor visit to the USS Arizona memorial online and I think you save a few dollars. That is a must see especially for a Navy family. I cannot remember how much it cost though. The US Army Museum at a park right next to Waikiki Beach across from the Trump International hotel, is free and parking is very cheap there. There is also the Hale Koa hotel right there which is military and you might be able to get in though they might also be booked 8 months ahead your son needs to make the reservations. If you have time and your son can get you to the beach at the Kaneohe Bay Marines base the beach is free and very beautiful with picnic tables there. They also have cabins for rent at the Marine base right one the beach can't remember the name but they are supposed to be amazing we saw them from the outside. Literally right next to the beach. We were there for 2 weeks and did different things every day.

You do sound overwhelmed and deservedly so. If you were to go back and read some of my questions from two years ago you would see you are not alone. We've all been there and we continue on this path of living the Navy life. Have fun with it and congratulations to your daughter! She is part of a very small group of women who will be "Pioneers" in the submarine family. Very exciting for her!

Comment by mrsb on July 14, 2015 at 10:20pm: VKat, some commands do not allow blankets from home, either sewn or crocheted, due to flammability issues. He can always use it in his barracks. Best to wait and have him check with his command before you send something for him for the boat.
