hello!   Just found this group!  My son just left on 6/15 and I am anxiously awaiting "the letter" now!   He was signed up for the "sonar tech" and the recruiter told me his next step is at Groton CT.  I guess this is "A" school, I get so confused trying to keep up with everything right now but I'm still very new!   And still very anxious that I can't talk with him!   Very proud of him but would love to be able to talk to him!   Love this site, it has helped me a great deal so hopefully I can get some insight from this group and maybe be of some help to others also!!

Tidefan - my son's boat had just come back from several deployments when he finished BESS and was put into dry dock. He then finished TM school before going to his boat - which is stationed at Groton.  He had been told he would likely be sent to another boat that was underway to work on his Fish, but he never was.  He did all of his work to complete his Dolphins while it was in dry dock.  Very difficult to learn how things work when they aren't there!, but he finally completed it in less than a year.  Not the most ideal situation by any means, but that was 16 months ago, he's moved up to PO2,  and things are going well for him on his sub.  They've completed several underways but have yet to be deployed since being put in dry dock in Oct 2012.  I know I'm talking about a refurbish situation rather than new construction, but there are similarities.  This will be exciting for your son!  The Fish will come  - Mark's comments are spot on as usual!

Thank you Eaglefan,  I appreciate the comments.  I know we all need some joy and fun in our life right about now, so even though we will only get to see him a little bit, we are going.  Car rented, hotel suite reserved, and leaving Thursday about 12.  It will be a fast trip there and a short time to see him, but between my daughters therapy, her summer school, and my other son's football schedule it is all we can do at this time.  I know we will all enjoy seeing hiim.

tidefan - your son is experiencing a normal part of life in new construction.  Extra schools in the military are almost always 'good deals' - and schools that give you more mastery of your equipment (which these schools likely will do) is time very well spent.  Dolphins are a neat milestone, and there are benefits to earning them - but they are not the most important part of submarine service.  The knowledge it takes to earn the enlisted dolphins is not in depth by any means.  It's more about learning to develop working relationships with others and memorizing some trivia about operations in parts of the boat you're not specifically trained for.  Those schools give him the depth of knowledge that really matters professionally - in addition to the experience he will get going to sea when that time comes.

Good morning. My sailor is finishing up A school for sonar tech. He has his orders for Groton while his boat is being built. He was hoping for ride a longs to work on his dolphins but someone(not sure who) told him that he might have to do more school while waiting for boat to be finished. Anyone else had this happen

Hi madmoby from another Okie sub mom! We went last month to visit our son who's at Kings Bay also.  Since we had 4 days to spend with him we decided to stay on the beach in St. Augustine, FL which is about 80 miles south of base. There is also a pretty nice beach at Jacksonville which is about 40 miles from base.  Sailors little brother and sister were with us, so the beach was a perfect spot for us to spend peaceful family time together.  I hope you guys can find a place to stay next week.  The drive is long, but so worth it! I understand your son going through wanting to be independent. I think they all go through that at some time.  I just tell my son that even "independent, grown up" boys still need their mommas:)!

Mamajen, I was able to find what I posted earlier in the month, & "copy and paste" it for you to go to the Website, "ombudsmanregistry.org", you should be able to finds your sons sub & write to the ombudsman yourself, introducing yourself & have her put you on her contact list. When you get to that site, follow the steps below:
1. Click on, "Contact Your Ombudsman"
2. Click on the part of the map where your son is
Serving.
3. Under "Regions", click which region. (Hawaii,
Only has one region).
4. Scroll under, "Commands" until you find your
Sons sub listed.
5. Press, "Contact", & start your e-mail to your
sons ombudsman.

Good Luck & I hope this helps!
