Our son is on required shore time after his time on subs. He recently went back to IL and caught the skies of his high school classmate's farm at night, as well as where their family business kenneling dogs. We've enjoyed being able to contact him at will, so long as he is not supervising shift work at Groton.  Here's his pix

Submarine movements are not something that should be discussed here, except in a very general way such as "soon" or "next month".
When our son is going underway, he can give us 24 hours notice and a very vague notion of how long (e.g. "probably longer than last time"). I could maybe guess +/- 2 weeks, but anyone who needs to know already knows. Not easy for us parents, but they call it the Silent Service for a reason.

If you have a serious circumstance such as a family illness, see the Red Cross info to the right.

The CT group is getting together for a luncheon on Saturday August 12 at the Bull & Barley in Shelton, in case you are interested. This is a very friendly supportive group - no drama. It is a mix of enlisted and officer moms (some dads too, but mostly moms)

Cath, thanks for letting me know that. I will try to join both of them, once my son graduates. I was wondering if there were any Conn. groups out there. Good to know.

LindaGirl - that is wonderful news! I'm sure he's glad that he is so close to home as well! Btw - if you are on FB - there are 2 groups - loved ones of Groton, CT and CT Navy parents. Both are good support groups for sailors stationed in CT.

Hi everyone just wanted to share some good news with everyone. We just found out our youngest son who is attending Submarine School in Groton, Conn. just received his orders & will be stationed in Groton, Conn. for the next 4 years to begin his Navy career. We are so pleased & happy, as we live 50 miles from the base on Long Island, NY, which means we will be seeing him a lot more then we see our older son who is stationed in Hawaii. We had prepared ourselves that our youngest would also be stationed in Hawaii, as I was told most of the Submariners are sent there, so it was an unexpected, total surprise that our son will be so close to home. He graduates from Sub School on Sept. 22 & reports to his Sub on Oct.9th. So happy that he got his first choice!

My husband and I went to Niagara Falls many years ago before passports were needed and both sides are beautiful! I think we liked the Canadian side best. They are a must see!

I'm a Texan, too!  Native Ft. Worthian.  But, living in Indianapolis for the next 3 years, when hubs retires and we move back!

Hi Greek Mom,  I just visited Niagara falls it is worth the trip.  If you nuke wants to go across to canada he should check with the navy. My son is a nuke officer so not sure if it is different for him but to go to canada while he was on leave for PCS he had to fill out a bunch of paper work to cross and he has a pass port. We choose to stay on the US side.
