Thanks for all of the feedback. At least I know what to expect, and even saying that, I'm sure there will be some unexpected things as well. It's the Navy! ;) Looking forward to spending some time with my son next week before he has to head back and then at some point get sent out to his deployed boat.

Great ideas on the phone. My son is on the San Juan and they told him to get his passport. He wasn't able to take his phone on the underways since he has been in CT, but since he's close to getting his fish he was able to take his phone. Study time is still his primary focus and when they see him concentrating on that it has worked out positively for him.

Son on our Verizon plan because saves him $; he pays me $1200/yr at once ($100 a month) which covers his smartphone, insurance on it, big GB plan. I put on military hold when he's deployed; he uses a burner phone in port, shares cost with buddies. Verizon also offers military discount on smartphone purchases.I made him an administrator on our wireless plan so he can tweak the GB as needed....like SlezaksMom, so long as he's paying for it, I'm good.

Verizon will suspend without billing for military members.

My son prefers to keep his phone on when he deploys so that he can use it while in port. As ol don't pay the bill, I don't have a say.

That is great information to know. Thanks for sharing CO-TwinSalorsMom. What phone service to you have? I have Verizon and was wondering if it will work for my service.

My son is on my Family plan for his phone. When either of my sailor twins deploy I put the phone on Military hold till they get home. That way there are suspended charges and no bill the whole time they are gone.

My son's boat was deployed as well when he was home after he graduated from A school.  They decided not to transport him so he a couple weeks of HI time and I talked to him often.  Now he is studying and reading so that he qualifies for his dolphins. I haven't talked to him in days....I send him inspirational quotes almost daily to inspire him and let him know I think of him everyday. I'll receive a simple "Aye" once he reads the quote.  At least I know he is getting them:-)  The silent service stuff is all new to me too....hard to get used to.

Thanks co-twinsalorsmom. We will make sure to order that passport before he heads back to base. His chief told him that he did not need to put a rush on it or anything, and also told him to take his time on his leave as well. They must know it will be a bit before they send him out to meet the boat. That hurry up and wait thing. LOL My son assured me that he would figure it out along the way and not to worry. He would find a way to call home if and when he gets the chance. Like I said before, I was soo spoiled with my other sailor. This silent service stuff is new to me. ;)

Mine on a sub has a passport, the twin on a destroyer does not. My son does not have his phone on him. He somehow uses internet to "call" home. He buys credits?? I know when they run out he has to buy more then calls back. I send emails to him often and he occasionally sends one my way when he can. We had a long silent period from January till about two weeks ago. He apparently did not get my emails till then and got them all at once. Yikes, a lot of emails.
