Cath Bubblehead, thanks for the reply. I called the Ombudsman and we are on the list. I guess they just haven't tried to contact us.

KHarmon - if this is his first trip, he is VERY busy! Keep emailing him. If you are on the ombudsman list, then she can give you info, if not, she cannot. If you are on the list, contact her - some are better than others!

My son is on a boomer, not a fast attack, so I do not know how mail drops work - sorry!

My son is on the Newport News. His Dad and I have only had one phone call from him, and a few very short emails. We have not heard from the Ombudsman, and are really surprised to be reading some of these posts about homecoming, mail drops, 1/2 way boxes, pictures and news articles on where the sub has been. Is there one place to go for this information? We are pretty lost as sea here. Any help/info is greatly appreciated.

Kaye S, I love the "Auntie for a year" thing!!  How fun that must have been!!!

Comment by LoriM (div 337--Kevin's submom) on March 10, 2016 at 6:19pm

My son loves when he doesn't have to shave while on the boat. He is one of those guys who has to shave all the time. They also have contests to see who can grow the biggest beard/mustache. He took a pic with a regulation mustache after being underway--I like him better without one. He didn't keep it.  He said it it easier to shave then keep it up all the time.

As usual, Mark is the answer man!

About $$$ for not shaving:  FRG groups are not allowed to market fundraising to civilians - who might consider that as "double-dipping" (they pay military salaries, and the wives want more?!)

Thus, FRGs must find creative ways to fund their treasuries for family holiday parties, etc., but stay "within the family."  So, sailors pay to stay scruffy!  My son's former boat also auctioned services offered by the 'family' - the CO would wash/wax a car, the COB would grill a meal, the XO would babysit, etc.

I personally offered to be "Auntie for a Year."  A wife 'bought me' for her sailor, who was deployed to the middle east for a year.  Every month, I sent a care package, plus cards for birthday, anniversary, etc.  He STILL writes to me as his "Aunt K.!"  All good fun :-)

Don't know about no shave - but my son mentioned that for a donation sailors on their boat need not shave for the duration. I forgot what the money went to.

Thank you Mark.  I thought I was safe with info as his ombudsman shared them and said we could share and say where they had been.  Good point about the repair.  It was mentioned in the article the sub was in port longer than anticipated due to repairs.  The citizens of the port were concerned about repairs being made to a nuclear sub in their port. They were afraid the water might be contaminated.  The Navy assured them it had nothing to do with the nuclear system.  All of this was in the article released by the Navy.  I appreciate all the administrators do for all the groups and try to never break any rules.  I also like we are a drama free group and surely do not want to start any drama.

My son should be testing in the next few days.  I hope all goes well for him.  Not sure how confident he is as they have been silent for a while now.  Also on no shave at this time.  It that a way to save water?  Or just make things easier??? NMH's to all us moms.

I only post info that has been already posted on their FB page.

Scubagirl - your post was fine, as your ombudsman said.  Naming the port visita is fine after the boat has left. You didn't get specific about the repair or part, so that was ok also.  It would be better not to mention anything about repairs though, just to be on the safe side.  I suggest everyone interested check out the navy.mil website.  There are links to navy news and photos there that will confirm what scubagirl said about publicly released news and photos.
