I sent some Christmas gift wrapped with mine that he could open for Christmas. One is a Tee Shirt, I hope that is OK??

Thanks for the advice and I did check with the ombudsman and she checked with the COB.  He was fine with the sheets and a 100% cotton or wool blanket.  No rack curtains and sheets had to be 100% cotton also.  The sox I got him are wool.  His birthday is Jan 3rd so all we have bought him are things he can use.  Not cool birthday gifts but useful.  He is saving money for an engagement ring and to purchase a truck when he gets back from deployment.  We sold his car for him and let him use an extra car we had.  He has learned a car payment is not fun.  He wants an older truck and to pay cash for it.  We will be looking here in GA next year when it gets closer to homecoming.  He trust us to find something he will like and get a good deal. He was ripped off when he bought his last car.

Yes I concur. Check with the ombudsman or your sailor. My sons first commander would not allow non-navy sheets, etc. due to fire hazard. He was also real strict on electronics on deployment/underways as well. Each command is different. This guy was apparently a real tough one. They couldn't string lights on the sub for the holidays during stand down when most all the other subs did. He's got a new commander now and he likes him much better.

Regarding sheets on subs, you may want to check with the Ombudsman for your son's boat to see if they allow sheets from outside; my son's CO doesn't allow anything not Navy. I sent him  a sheet thing to put in the rack while hot racking so he didn't have to share sheets, not sure if he was allowed to take it on board. Some COs are very picky.  Just a heads up.

My son bought his own 3 sets. I suspect the hot raking has to do with that. You don't want to get in someone else's warm sheets. Yuckers.

My son is in Hawaii also but currently on deployment.

chiming in on Christmas gift ideas: my son loves wool socks and soft merino wool long underwear. Apparently wool doesn't get (too) stinky too fast. Expensive but worth it.

Navymom9828, that sounds like my son.  He spends $400.00 a month on eating out because he does not like food at VA base. Spends money on frivolous things like a expensive watch but not on basic towels and sheets.  Go figure.

submarine, my son is a Machinist Mate Torpedo Man, got to Va in March and has been going out once a month for a week or two to get all on board qualified for different watches, etc.  He should get Dolphins while deployed(his first) and hopes to be able to take E4 exam next March while on board.  COB said if all goes well he should be able to test while deployed.  Not too worried about the deployment as long as he stays positive.  He has been talking to someone on base to get his mind set in the correct frame of mind.  The only thing he worries about is not talking to girl friend for weeks on end.  We will be sending emails daily and have packed a great box for their half way night to get him through the last 3 months.  Since he scuba dives being under does not bother him and being away from home does not bother him it is the not seeing or talking to girl friend.  Just talking to someone who has been there helps.  His COB is pretty good also with the new sailors on board his boat.  Only a couple of them.
