Thanks William.  I always count on you and Mark for good information!  I wish we could stay at my son's house but there are 4 roommates and I think that would be a bit much with 2 more people!

karent0801 our family traveled to Hawaii in February to visit our son.  I booked the tickets through Orbitz orbitz.com

The way to say is look at the airfare for a few days plus or minus.  We arrived on a Friday and flew home on a Thursday.  They do package deals with car and hotel but we were fortunate to stay at his house in Hawaii.  You really need a car to get around.  There is a great deal to see in Hawaii that is free or very low cost.  Famous Waikiki beach you pay to park on the street.  On the north coast Turtle Beach is free and you see the sea turtles  Climbing Diamond Head is free.  It is a few dollars for parking.   Pali Lookout one of the most beautiful and historic scenic spots, is free and if I recall the parking was also free.   Your son can also book tickets for the attractions at the MWR on the base at greatly reduced prices.  You can book the Pearl Harbor visit to the USS Arizona memorial online and I think you save a few dollars.  That is a must see especially for a Navy family.  I cannot remember how much it cost though.  The US Army Museum at a park right next to Waikiki Beach across from the Trump International hotel, is free and parking is very cheap there.  There is also the Hale Koa hotel right there which is military and you might be able to get in though they might also be booked 8 months ahead your son needs to make the reservations.  If you have time and your son can get you to the beach at the Kaneohe Bay Marines base the beach is free and very beautiful with picnic tables there.  They also have cabins for rent at the Marine base right one the beach can't remember the name but they are supposed to be amazing we saw them from the outside.  Literally right next to the beach.  We were there for 2 weeks and did different things every day.

My husband and I are planning a trip to Hawaii in March for homecoming of our son's sub.  Is it best to book hotel and airfare with an actual travel agent?  Any info on budget sight seeing...Thanks for your help!

Hello DawnB01 Welcome to our group. I see you've already received some good info from Cath. To help you we recommend going to the right hand side of this forum where you will see "Pages " (14) there you will find several articles written by people who have a ton of experience to share. My suggestion would be to click on "View All." Here is one link in particular that will answer questions about the schooling your daughter will be a part of while in Groton.  http://navyformoms.com/group/submoms/page/submarine-schooling-in-it...

You do sound overwhelmed and deservedly so. If you were to go back and read some of my questions from two years ago you would see you are not alone. We've all been there and we continue on this path of living the Navy life. Have fun with it and congratulations to your daughter! She is part of a very small group of women who will be "Pioneers" in the submarine family. Very exciting for her!

VKat, some commands do not allow blankets from home, either sewn or crocheted, due to flammability issues.  He can always use it in his barracks.  Best to wait and have him check with his command before you send something for him for the boat.
