How long does it usually take to hear from the ombudsman once the boat goes under?

Hi, Folks!... Your friendly (most of the time) Administrator here!  Some things to know:

  1. I don't post often, but I read the posts here everyday.  As long as everyone is playing nice and relating good info, I just watch.
  2. My son will be active for 9 years in September (Yes, Mark, it's nine).  He's presently a trainer in Ballston Spa, headed back to a boat in May, 2016.
  3. No question is too stupid to post!  If we "old salts" don't know the answer, we DO know where to find it!
  4. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE read the "Pages" of info located in the right-hand column BEFORE you post answers to others' questions.  There are many subtle differences in how various boats are administered.  One answer doesn't fit all (for example, a mail drop isn't always a gallon Ziploc).

Keep being the great group of folks that you are.  I've made many friends through N4M.  We've always had a respectful, helpful crowd here and I'm grateful. :-)   Hugs! k.

What I meant so say is mine got to Groton in January 2013: he is based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii now Lol.

jkayr congratulations to your son.  He is fortunate to be relocating during the beginning of summer.   Mine got there in the middle of winter.   Groton is a well run base, and they recently completed a brand new commissary there.  There is a good size Navy Exchange on base.  He will be living in a barracks on the base. It is within walking distance to the galley but not that close to the boats.   Since the entire base is dedicated to attack submarines it is a very sub-focused base.

It is an easy drive from Ballston Spa to Groton.   There are some good restaurants in the area too.

Hello everyone, new to the group.

My sailor just graduated Prototype last week in BS.  He's headed to Groton for the USS San Juan.  I know he's relieved to be done with the last 2 years of training, but he seems nervous (quiet).  Maybe just the unkown of moving again.  Any suggestions for support a Mom can give for his next steps are welcomed.

Have a great week!

Agreed LindaGirl and Linda. I tell you I was relieved to have mine in the navy as opposed to college. Don't have to worry about parties, flailing, or getting into general trouble, they are good young men but I was concerned for the party atmosphere in college. I see so much maturity in both of my boys the past 2-3 years.

Hi madhoby

I had an issue with my son not putting me on the omb list. He kept saying he would be it just never seemed to happen. He is single and i felt it was important for at least one loved one to have some information about his travels in the Navy. His father and I are divorced for many years (amicably) and when he left for boot camp he was briefly temporarily staying with his dad so he put his dad as his emergency contact info on his paperwork. When he was very suddenly and abruptly (surge) deployed almost 2 years later we found out the hard way after he was already gone and "silent" that you can not add  someone to the omb list without the sailor having added you to paperwork themselves. Luckily his dad had empathy for me and we worked out a system of sharing the omb info that only he was able to get. My Sailor was gone for a very long one and i wish i could say he has since added me to the list...but 3 deployments (none as long as that one) later still no! LOL he figured it worked fine the way it was why have to bother with annoying details like paperwork.

One thing I do want to mention that i have not seen mentioned really on here is Power of Attorney. The POA i forced him to finally do AFTER the surge because during that time there were numerous problems with fraud on his credit card and other issues with his bills that I could not take care of because he had not granted me POA. Getting the POA is incredibly simple, done for free on the base and highly recommended for all sailors since someone really needs to monitor bill paying etc when they are "silent". Encourage your sailors if they havent done it already to make sure to get that POA done as it will make life much easier for whoever is taking care of their financial stuff.

Congrats belated to all the new people on here for all the many accomplishments! My sailor has been in almost 4 years now (USS VIrginia)  and has come so far.

Yes Mark, I agree with you about respecting my son's wishes.  It is a hard balance to walk to not put to much pressure on him to put me on the list and to also not go behind his back and ask the ombudsman to put me on the list.  I have raised him to have a good head on his shoulders, and I have to respect that he knows what he is doing.  I will share with him the practice of a halfway point.  HE may decide to allow us on the list then as he can request some things to come in his bag.
