Hi Kris-  How far West Houston are you? we are in Katy. My son PIR'd in April, you will love it!  Some like to go look around, mine just wanted to hang with us at the hotel and we went to the mall far a movie. We stocked our hotel fridge with his favorite snacks the night before and he took a long shower!

About Grad n Go- that is an old term they don't use anymore.if he stays in GL for A school you will see him most of the weekend. If he is not staying in GL then you will have a few hours fri afternoon and then he will usually have to report to the airport around 3 am Sat. morning. you can hang out with him there til he flies out. Hope this helps. : )

What do they call it when they cross the international data line.?

Comment by Brenda Sue on May 13, 2011 at 7:15pm

The ceremony of Crossing the Line is an initiation rite in the Royal Navy, U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marine Corps, and other navies that commemorates a sailor's first crossing of the Equator.[1] Originally, the tradition was created as a test for seasoned sailors to ensure their new shipmates were capable of handling long rough times at sea. Sailors who have already crossed the Equator are nicknamed (Trusty) Shellbacks, often referred to as Sons of Neptune; those who have not are nicknamed (Slimy) Pollywogs.

Equator-crossing ceremonies, typically featuring King Neptune, are also sometimes carried out for passengers' entertainment on civilian ocean liners and cruise ships. They are also performed in the merchant navy and aboard sail training ships.

Why do they call it a shellback?
Comment by Brenda Sue on May 13, 2011 at 5:47pm

DaneLover, a Sailor becomes a shellback when they cross the equator for the first time!  It is a HUGE deal on the ship.  They even used to get a certificate for it - I'm not sure if they still do.

I'm pretty sure I know which ship you are talking about - and there are about 40 pictures of it on Facebook!  You might want to hunt for one of your son!.

My sailor son is now a "Shellback"! lol   I can't wait to hear the stories from this one along with what it means. Anyone know?  No more WOGZ (not sure of this one either) on that ship! HA  Sure do miss him, can't wait for them to get home. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, the weather is awesome today! :)

Donna we ended up with a light sprinkle but it lasted for a couple of hours.  Appreciate anything we get at this point.  It is amazing the difference in the plants when they get watered from the rain.

I live in Spring. Pir was Oct 1st. Our sailor just wanted to hang with us. He missed being with us more than he thought he would. He was grad n go. We spent most of Fri. with him then met him at the airport at 2 a.m. and stayed with him until his flight left at 12 noon, not optimal but doable.
