Rob says 90 days Kathy and they won't know until they get there. If she gets housing then skype or vonage which is a great deal and you can video chat on facebook, but cell phones there are so expensive and especially for long distance. I got Rob a phone while he was there but he needed wifi to use it then wed just video chat anyways.

My daughter says she is going to need a new phone once she gets to Japan. Anyone know of any phones with international calling so that she is able to keep in touch?

He is definitely a cutie, congrats :) I can ask my husband Rob about that Kathy, I remember him saying they got 3 months of kitchen duty having to wash dishes, but don't remember anything else.

Hi MarianBro2011 and Kathy my son is an mmfn on the Blue Ridge welcome. I just missed my son's 21st too but it just happened to be when they had a picnic on ship so he still had a good day. I sent him a "Birthday party in a box".

My daughter will be leaving for the Blue Ridge in mid October for a 3 year deployment. She just graduated her AIT at Ft. Lee in culinary. Will be her first time outside of the US. She says she is excited, hope she will continue to be so.

Welcome Kathy! My husband Rob just left the Blue Ridge last month and is finally home with me :) It's a great ship. I was on it and saw it when I was in Japan visiting him in April. You'll be able to communicate a decent amount (depending on your son and his schedule) since its a communication ship. I was lucky to that degree. Japan is beautiful and want to go back, maybe well get to one day. Great to hear too Linn your trip was great. The people are amazing and flight does go by, the flight home felt longer though :/ I'm also glad everything is ok there after te weather yet again. Rob is doing well home. We finally got him a car, he's treating our puppy like a baby, takes her to the dog park by his dads house, joined a gym and cooks for me :) he's enjoying his freedom, especially as we sit at a Minnesota Vikings football game, unshaven and beer in hand!

Hi Kathy from another Kathy LOL

Welcome to the Blue Ridge!!

My daughter is an IT and has been on this ship for 3 years unfortunately her time is up she'll be leaving Oct 22 to come to San Diego for 3 years, otherwise I'm sure your son would probably have run into Katie.

When does your son graduate A school?? I can find out if 1 of Katie's good friends can be his sponsor. This is an awesome group here, we always keep each other informed as much as we can, When the big earthquake and Tsunami hit the BR was underway and this group is how I found out that they were safe and not in Japan. We are always looking for pics of each others Sailors LOL

You need to check out there Facebook page this ship is the reason I got a FB page LOL, they are always posting pics of where they are and what they are doing so always good information there. The BR being the Admirals ship and Flagship does go to lots of places in the 3 years Katie has been on her she's been to 30 different Countries!!

So Happy for you Ashgrove!!!

Like Blondie said stop in and let us know what's happening every so often.

Linn I know u are going to Japan you may be there now, if you get the chance to go to the ship try to go over to Katie's division and see the banner that was sent to the ship, We were at our State Fair this year and they had these huge banners for people to sign that they were sending to our Military, well I had on my Navy Mom's shirt they asked if I had someone deployed I said yes they said would u like for us to send a banner to her so I said yes. If u do get to see it ask if u can take a picture of it for me please. I asked Katie to take 1 she said they are not allowed, you'd think something like this that the whole ship would take a picture with it!! Have A Great Trip!!!

You all have been troopers. Its been a long almost year without him but it will benefit us both. Everything is easier to see in hindsight and it was really ok. I can't wait to have an actual honeymoon, or even a wedding! There's so much to look forward to. He has two navy buddies getting married in the next year so a trip to Hawaii and California will be happening and I am excited for that. I will be checking in, I'm sure he'll want to know how the BR is doing. I'm so glad I got a whole new family out of this experience :)
