@Eelia111 & PeachyNavyMom..   I can tell you this, my boy is a foodie and an obsessed fisherman. He doesn't really talk about the food on the ship but there are dozens of places nearby with excellent food along with some fast food places on base. He actually just found a place that service the kobe beef, best in the world. And he says he fishes in places he's only seen on River Monsters. Bottom line, your kids will have the experience of a lifetime. He misses home and misses us, but if you're going to be in the Navy, that's the spot and that's the ship.  Also, they aren't really allowed to discuss exact dates or locations when going under way, but they can usually get in contact once they port and let you know where they are.  Wifi is a blessing in this case. :)  They will love it, I promise.

well they were training hard form what he said so busy and the time difference doesn't help...I am just so proud of my kid I never thought he would be on a flag ship for the Navy and they seem to treat them pretty good but I here the food sucks! when he came back for a few weeks all I did was cook homemade and goto the places he missed...ah well can't wait to hear from again do you guys know when they get under way its all kinda hit or miss so I never know to try getting a hold of him thanks so nice to have ship moms for support!

@bubsmom. Glad to hear that. My son has been there about two weeks. FaceTime hasn't worked well but he as texted a little. Trying not to bug him before they get underweigh. He said when he thought they were leaving so hopefully he will let me know for sure when they are leaving.

@PeachyNavyMom... My boy has been on the Blue Ridge for about 2 years.  Communicating underway is usually not possible unless they port and can access wifi.  I did not hear from him a whole lot for the first couple of months or so while he was accommodating to his new job and location.  Little bit of culture shock.  But yes, skype seems to be the best tool for us.  I skype and facebook message him whenever and he responds when he can.

The only way I am able to communicate with my son while they are underway is when they arrive at a port and get internet connections. Sometimes they can get it while underway, but they have to wait for connection and then it is slow. My son just started his 2nd year there in January.

@Eellia 111 My son communicates as often as possible he has his laptop and skypes with me or emails me I talked with him today on skype and the skype chat before that was around April 12 I think. He tries to email me and let me know when he will be on, so we can meet up so to speak. The ship should be going underway soon. When it is underway is when I am not so sure of communication. He has only been over there since Mar. If anyone knows how or if they are able to communicate while underway, I would like to know.
