Linn invited me to join this group. Her daughter Kristina and my daughter Chelsea are room mates on the ship. Although we only live about an hour apart, we have not yet had the chance to meet in person. I asked Chelsea before I joined this group how she felt about it. Chelsea went to the Naval Academy and I used to belong to the parent listserve which had thousands of members. The mids hated the listserve because we always knew what they were up to. We even knew what they had for dinner the night before :) It was very comforting to me, especially in the beginning during Plebe Summer as there was no contact allowed other than snail mail. Although I can now contact Chelsea whenever I want, and she is a full fledged adult that I do not worry about too much, I am still looking forward to making new friends who have children in the Navy and are on the same ship to boot!

KTS - what is an IT? All I can think of is information technology. I am not familiar with all of the Navy lingo yet.

Molly - I can understand why your son would like to be undesignated. Seems like a great way to keep his options open. Chelsea considered going JAG after a while, but said that there were many more opportunities for foriegn assignments (which is what she wants) if she did nto specialize so much.

Kathy C. - Do you know if there is an orchestra on the ship? Or even off the ship. Chelsea plays the bass. Although I'm sure she would have jumped at the oportunity if there was one. I have her bass sitting here taking up room, along with her piano - (no small instruments for her). Would love to have it sent to Japan :)

Hi everyone. My name is Elaine and I live in Clarkston, MI. My daughter Chelsea is serving as an ensign on the USS Blue Ridge. She has been in Japan since June and absolutely loves it. Although I miss her, I am happy that she is following her dreams. With all of today's technology, Japan doesn't seem that far away. I have two other daughters in college - one at DePaul U. in Chicago and the other at Michigan State. Having all three home for Christmas was a real treat!

PGR never got to him, but the Navy Mom did. In Illinois, he was walking in the snow at night. No one picked him up. I told him they would if he had his uniform on. So he walked for like 4 hours and found a hotel. That was in December right after he left GL. Found a hotel and next morning Kate - Marty's mom picked him up to get his car fixed. Took him there, got his car towed and took him back next day to get it after they fixed it. He was on his way again, and Cheryl S. in Tulsa fed him and let him spend the night. He broke down again, so Bobbie (Michaels mom) got him in OK City, OK and let him spend the night and took him to the airport. Then C from T's navy seal mom friend in San Diego picked him up at the airport JUST IN TIME to make the base. He said when he left, "Oh mom, I have SIX days to get there, I have plenty of time" ha ha. The best laid plans, right? I have made wonderful, life long friends on here. We'd all do the same for each other.

Molly, Patrick has the same great story about both road trips. The first from Chicago to SD, and then SD back home to East TX. You know some of the moms that helped him, even just for a stop or a night's sleepover, or a drive to the airport. He was blown away by our power of connections, and power of information, knowledge and education! I was able to send pkgs last year and hoped to be able to contribute this year, but 2009 was the worst year we've ever had. Just cooking a meal for the Great Lakes RDC that was here visiting the girlfriend was the best I could do. Molly, if you go, bring me back, or ship me some of that SAKE!

There is a Kachina doll for virility - thats the first I've heard of snake venom in Sake. We had Sake that came in a quart cardboard milk jug - I thought that was an odd way to package it. Thanks to the ladies who sent Patrick Happy Birthday messages today.
