IDK, they have computers on the ship they can use. He can go to the USO and use the WIFI there. I keep in touch with my son through Facebook and Skype when he's at the USO. He doesn't have his phone there, we have it on military hold until the next time he comes home on leave.

IKD..  I actually get quite a few phone calls from my son.  There is some sort of phone center where they just sign up to make calls and can do so at no charge. My son has only been there for 3 months but as far as I know, their normal cell phones will not work. My son had to buy a Japanese phone and there was no international plan.  We are having some issues with skype but hope to get that in place some day soon.  We keep losing our connection for video.  We don't have a problem with audio, though, so they can make and receive phone calls that way, too.  By the way, Welcome!  :)

Thanks for the warm welcome.  I look forward to getting to know all of you the next 3 years.  I guess my only question for now is communication.  Are they able to use their cell phones, laptops, tablets. etc.. on occasion or regularly or are we back to waiting for the pay phone calls when ever possible?

My son just got orders for USS Blueridge.  I am so excited to join a new group and talk to moms.

Rhonda, they are still in port. Sn made it safely back after a mechanical delay forced him to reroute (airlines put him up for the night in LA) and contacted people on the ship to inform of the flight delay. They extended his leave. Harleygirl, what does your son do? Mine is a culinary specialist.

Hello!  I just found out that my son will be on the USS Blueridge!  He arrived in Japan on Thursday after 2 days of flying.  Looking forward to talking to fellow moms!

I haven't heard from my son since the 25th of December and can't seem to get in touch with him. Is the Blue Ridge still in Japan or have they left port?

Reno...  I do believe the NEX has a website where you can either purchase a gift card or possibly reload an existing card if you have the card#.  Try this:
